Post The plight of the sane conservative.
How does a sane conservative (and there are many) deal with associating themselves with the republican party? It doesn't take much digging before you run into complete nut-jobs like Sharon Angle

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010 ... -video.php

odious gas-bags like O'Reilly, Beck and Limbaugh (their idiocy is legion. Find your own link)

and it appears that Sarah Palin may once again be at the top of their presidential options. Sarah Palin!

http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/853c6b ... shoutitout

Here we see a member of the silent majority. Sensible conservatives across america are rolling over and letting the dregs of their party take the wheel. Sieze the day conservatives! Make that word respectable again! Take it back from the neo-cons, religious moral police, and un-informed soccer-moms who want to be president!

Post Re: The plight of the sane conservative.
Johnson, you are dead bang right (pun intended).

I could live with Limbaugh, the Fox talking heads were easy to ignore. Harry Reid worried me but now I lay awake nights thinking how Palin might pull defeat out of the mouth of victory in the next presidential campaign. For it is ours (the conservatives) to lose. We could elect a corpse next time--the benefit of a corpse is, it can't talk itself out of winning--but no way will even the tired, discouraged, worn-out American electorate vote in Palin (I thought of and rejected a dozen adjectives to put in front of "Palin" but her name says it all).

Post Re: The plight of the sane conservative.
The thing about conservatives is.... they're themselves. They're shifty but not altogether stupid (despite evidence against this argument). They'll see another conservative leader and cower... They'll question themselves. They may not vote. They know they've f*cked up real bad before. They'll retreat inside themselves and allow the nation to heal completely. Good on them. Maybe they can spend their time more wisely and just pray. Stay out of politics and pray all day.

I hope you are one of the good ones. You realize that victory for the sake of victory is not enough. Palin being in the white house is not a victory for the republicans. it is a victory for the defeat of intelligence and reasonable behavior. it is the defeat of preparedness. it is the defeat of sound judgment.

It is not enough to simply have any a republican, no matter who that is, no matter what they stand for, no matter how limited their ability, simply to hold that position for a political party.

That is un-acceptable.

The only way to to reclaim your party is to turn these raving jackals out on their asses. Don't let Palin speak for you. Don't let the words of Glen Beck stand for your positions. Call them down.

I can assure you, no hippie will ever speak for me. Don't let jingoistic backwards slogan blaring anti-intellectuals speak for you. Conservative once stood for something people could be proud of. take it back.

Why do you bother Johnson? That kind of talk is best reserved for moderate democrats... not republicans. Republicans just want to drink the kool-aid Fox news pumps out man... Don't waste your time.

I could also say--in fact, I do--that the "other party" needs to take a look at conservatism and extract a lesson or two. I'm not talking about a lesson from the folks currently identified as conservative, since they often have little to do with conservatism. I'm talking about the philosophical/political stance that has an honored past. Doing just that did work politically for Bill Clinton.

Post Re: The plight of the sane conservative.
I am totally on board with fiscal conservativism.

That is THE job of government. Spend the taxes responsibly.

Republicans continue to carry the word "conservative" with them, and continue to think of themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility, but that simply has not been the case for the last several republican presidencies.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_ ... tial_terms

"Conservative" is now equivalent with a "moral" agenda. Namely, controlling who has sex with what. No gays, no abortion, keep the guns, and that is as far as they have thought government through.

I think i will stop calling them Republicans. They don't deserve that name. Neo-Cons do not have a plan for government. They only have a moral agenda to inflict on the rest of us.

huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/18/pete-sess ... 50431.html

This is not going to work any better than it did on the run up to the economic crash.

You know... we can't even get congress to pass laws against pork barrel spending - a slap in the face to every tax payer. How do you figure you're all for conservative spending? As if you'd have any control over it whatsoever?

The Dems spend it on the poor. The Reps spend it on the rich. Meanwhile you get hosed. WTF...?

The Reps talk a good talk but it's just a shifting of wealth. NeoCon? Nooooooo. There's no such thing. There's one or the other. Rep or Dem. 2 parties. That's it.

Post Re: The plight of the sane conservative.
It's amazing how the right-wing anti-intellectual extremists have taken over the Republican Party. Nuts like Sharon Angle and Rand Paul are Senate nominees, while Sarah Palin was a VP nominee who may run for President.

That general trend has been there for a while, though it's gotten worse in recent years. As far back as I can remember, the Democrats have selected more impressive candidates than the Republicans. For example, in every Presidential race since Nixon was running for office, the Democrat was more intelligent than the Republican, with the possible exception of the Bush/Dukakis race. The embarrassing morons in Congress are much more likely to be Republicans than Democrats.

I don't see things changing any time soon. The Republican voters are hyper-partisan, punishing any officeholders who takes a more nuanced approach and has a view of the world that's at all realistic. With the economy in the toilet, people are angry and voting based on their emotional passions.

Post Re: The plight of the sane conservative.
It's like i have always said.

Politics is a team sport now, complete with die-hard fans who would never even dream of talking bad about their favorite team, regardless of the extent of their suckiness.

It is nowhere near enough just to put a person from your party in office. What are they going to do when they get there? Do they have any idea what is involved in the process? Have they read any book... ever?

The government isn't a giant chalk board with hatch-marks under the dems and gop. Government is not about keeping score, or who's winnning.

Here's the problem.
The extremist republicans form two groups, and they fit together perfectly.
Authoritarian crazies, who want to control others, think that they are always right, and that no one else has a worth while opinion.
And tow the line, get in line, never ever challenge the authority sheeple.

In the middle you have all the sane conservatives.

Authoritarians and sheeple are very passionate and crazy. They are the ones who raise money to put up a bill-board in order to talk smack about all the people they hate, or have been told that they hate.

Normal republicans are just like democrats, in a lot of ways. They arent crazy. Because they arent crazy, they are not motivated to raise money to put up a bill-board calling down the crazies. They just want reasonable discourse and sound government.

They are whisperers and debaters in a auditorium full of blaring slogan screamers.

Here is a golden opportunity, conservatives.

http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/hea ... remedies-c

Sharron Angle has said on three different occasions... BEFORE she got the official nod as the republican candidate, that we should expect conservatives to turn to armed innsurection if they don't get their way this election.

Is there any of you who actually backs this woman's craven, fear-driven attempt to gain power over your fellow americans?

This is EXACTLY the kind of person you need to shove in a political closet and hope she doesn't come out. Instead, she is backed by the republican party, simply because she might have a chance of actually winning. Do you all not see how dangerous a person this stupid is for the nation?

She is actually talking about people shooting eachother. Another civil war, perhaps. Can you really sleep at night knowing that this woman has a microphone under your banner?

I can't stand her, or Michelle Bachman, who DID represent me until I moved out of her district. I can't stand MOST of the republicans who want the job of any public office. I also can't stand MOST of the democrats who want the job. I think it was Heinlein who wrote in one of his stories about a system of government where everyone who was eligible was forced into a lottery and the loser had to run the town (or colony, what ever it was). The first disqualification for the lottery was if you actually WANTED the job you couldn't have it. Sometimes I think he was onto something....

I seriously think that the two parties have polarized too far, and it is time for a centrist third party to jump into the middle where all of the common sense lies untouched by politicians.

Post Re: The plight of the sane conservative.
Hi I identify myself as a conservative because I see so much hate spewed from the left on the media, print and t.v. Where did you get the idea that conservatives:

" is now equivalent with a "moral" agenda. Namely, controlling who has sex with what. No gays, no abortion, keep the guns, and that is as far as they have thought government through."

where ever did you get this idea? If you just read the tone of the posts above so filled with hate and fear mongering such as the above statement. Of course we conservative republicans do not feel any differently about gays than democrats do. Since we are all related to gays and straights. I personally oppose abortion as I think it is murder, but my conservative Republican friends do not.

You know bullying is a great concern now in this country and I don't know why people are so surprised. What do you call the constant diatribes against anyone who is not a Democrat? Look at all the remarks about Sarah Palin.
We recently elected a Republican governor in the state of Maine and letters to the editor were universally apoplectic (at least those that were printed) because he received only 38% of the vote (5 candidates ran) and many registered voters did not vote. The letter writers assumed that all non-voters would have voted for their candidate!
