When this BBS started, I thought that I was not going to have much time for it, and that it would be something I logged into every now and again. But now I find myself logging in more often, just to see if there is anything new. I know that things are slow, because it is new, but I thought about suggesting this to pick up the pace a bit. This is based on a discussion Greg and I had, the last time we hung out. This may not coincide with the Booktalk vision and if not, that is OK with me...it is just a suggestion.

I was thinking of having a message board for Short Stories. They are an ease read, and some can be found online, so we could just post the URL. They are short and therefore, can provoke discussions at a faster pace.

The conversation Greg and I had was about "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It is about a woman's road to insanity. If we agree on this, that is going to me my suggestion for the first short story to read.

That's a fine idea. All we need is a "Short Stories" forum in the "Ongoing Discussions" section.

I'd say that any short story reading should be done on a very informal basis; kind of a "Here's a good short story I read, here's where you can find it, and anyone who wants to read it respond here" type structure. Not that we're a hell of a lot more formal with the full-length book selections, but we do all have to discuss and agree on those before we read them. The short stories should be on a completely whoever-wants-to-do-it basis.

Short stories would also be an excellent outlet for those of us who like fiction. It looks like nonfiction is going to dominate the "official" monthly BookTalk selections - and that's not a complaint - so a little fiction will add some imaginitve spice to our BBS discussions.

If Chris and the others agree, I'm behind it.

Lauren & Greg:

First of all, check out how I rewrote the header to this page. I've been spreading the news about BookTalk and I starting thinking that the header needed to be a bit more clear. I want people visiting for the first time to not feel that the group is exclusively for Floridians...because it isn't. Eventually, the majority of members will not be local at all.

And I really like your idea Lauren. I now need to think about how to implement it efficiently into the current board design. I see two components and one might not have been even what you were suggesting.

#1. We need a forum where members can do just as you suggested as post threads about short stories, poetry, or other literature and discuss it in a casual setting with anyone who opts to get involved. I have some ideas for this.

#2. It might be nice to add a forum or two for member contributed writing. I've read a few things Greg has written and he is a fantastic writer. I expect him to write books in the future and I'd enjoy reading anything he has to write. So I'll put together something to give some of you writers the chance to share your works.

Let me know what you think of the way I design things on this site. If there are changes you can think of that would make sense please let me know. Thanks!

Chris

Both of these ideas have been implemented. Let me know what you think!

Just a notice to everyone: Lauren and I have started a couple new threads in the "fiction" section and are going to try and create some interest in reading fiction here at BookTalk. Both of us will still be reading the non-fiction Books-of-the-Month, of course, but we're also trying to drum up a little bit of entertainment-based reading.

Anyone who'd like to join us please check out the "fiction" forum.

Greg:

I think you're right about trying a fiction book for our Book of the Month. We would probably attract a larger audience by expanding to fiction. Let's talk about this. I'll start a new thread where we can figure this out.
