Julian, I edited the title of this thread because we're discussing the Stanford Prison Experiment. Using those keywords in the subject line increase the chances that search engines will bring people here when they run search engine searches for those words.

I watched the video of the Stanford Prison Experiment two times. What did you all think about the video? According to the narrator some researchers felt that ethical lines were crossed and this experiment should never have been conducted. What do you think?

Wow, after watching those videos I can’t even begin to touch the surface of how many bad assumptions were being made by not only the participants but by Zimbardo himself.

Corrections is not about Dominance and Control it’s about Care Custody and Control.

The ratio of guards to inmates was way too high.

If officers acted like that in a real prison they would be shanked within a week… not to mention arrested. Holding an inmate in the box without written authority including a time limit is abuse and the officer could be charged with a civil rights violation.

Gangs put out hits on officers all the time; if officers acted like that they would certainly have a short and painful career.

Inmates are not generally referred to by number we normally use last names.

Making an inmate do pushups is counter productive, inmates already work out obsessively, I have seen inmates do pushup for ½ hour straight.

This may have been a success as an experiment of human behavior but it does not even come close to the reality of prison life. The inmates can and do fight back when abused and correction officers have far more legal restraints than is commonly believed.
