It's called double dipping.
The premise is; whatever the fishermen do to alleviate their losses due to the spill, will then reduce the damages to the fishermen created by BP and will reduce the award given to the fishermen. However, there is another premise; BP should mitigate their damages by utilizing those who may decrease the damage done, if not, the fines can be higher. I like this later premise better.
No, its not fair. This spill will have immeasurable consequences. I don’t give a rats ass about the CEO of BP, but I do feel for the fishermen whose livelihoods depend on the clean water of the gulf, and the blue collar workers of BP. BP does not have nearly enough money to adequately reimburse each person for losses connected to the spill. The awards given will be a pittance. I hope BP is paying these fishermen huge amounts for the work they are doing, because the losses of the fishermen are going to be massive, and the awards given, will be ultimately meaningless. BP will most likely declare bankruptcy because they will be unable to pay any awards at all.
The price of shrimp alone, as an example, will sky rocket out of control. With the economy as it is, not only will consumers not be able to afford shellfish such as shrimp, grocery stores will not be able to afford the wholesale price of shrimp to offer this item to consumers for sale.
This spill is like millions of alarm clocks going off at once, announcing “wake up”. This spill is a collision between the environment and commerce. Unfortunately, both have lost, and we may be in the difficult position to decide which is more important. The environment and commerce has meant the same thing for a long, long time.
