Single Walled Carbon Nano-tubes

I found this new SciFi book on Amazon.com called "M a x i s" by John T S ch epi se. One of my co-workers reccommended it. In it, the author makes several uses of What he calls single walled carbon na not ubes. Suposedly, these things can be made into fibers that are 100 times stronger than steel and one percent the weight. I looked into it further and the only example of these things being used like this is for the prposed space elevator. Can anyone shed some light on this technology? Is this something that may be viable in the future or is it one of those Lightsaber(Really neat to look at but no way practical) type deals?

Yes the space elevator exactly....except in "M a x i s" the author does somthing I've never heard of and that's to take those small strands of carbon nanotubes and weave them into a carbon nanotube fiber, similar I guess to carbon fiber of today and then use that in the construction of Cars, and buildings, and body armor etc. I wondering if that's even possible, but I guess that's the great thing about science fiction.

If they are capable of making carbon nano-threads, which i have seen already in some video i can't find right now, then they will be making all sorts of materials out of it.

Right now the problem is how to produce on large scales. Currently just being done in labratory settings, if i am not mistaken.

In time this is going to be the way. nano-materials are extremely versatile, durable, and have superior conductive properties. In so many ways they are just flat out better than say, copper wiring, or steel.

That's a great book for gatgets and sci-fi tech that's under the radar. So many sci-f movies, the advanced tech centers around vehicles, weapons, clothing, and story oriented props. M a x i s has great detailed explanations of futuristic ovens, newspapers, taxis, and even maids!

Dave50150 and MercBruce are the same person. This sort of thing really bothers me and is a violation of Rule 2 and 3 of our forums. What bugs me the most is that we welcome and even encourage authors to share their books on BookTalk.org. We just don't want authors to play us for fools and lie to us.
