Shall we add fiction to our format?

Would it be fun to read a fiction book every two months too? We could have one forum just for the fiction book discussions - no need for a separate forum for each book. We would simply create a thread for each book and keep the entire conversation within the thread. The books don't have to be of a freethinker variety.

Then we could have a chat session once per month specifically to discuss the fiction book. Naturally, we would invite the authors, but being the freethinkers book discussion community, we might strike out with these fiction authors.

I think it is a great idea, though I don't think that we should choose just any old fiction book to read. I would suggest that we do stick to the free thinker theme for our novels. Things like science-fiction or philosophical novels are bound to generate plenty of discussion, which is, at the end of the day, what we want.

I think that many fiction authors are freethinkers. For example, Isaac Asimov and Kurt Vonnegut!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. If we read any old book we're going to attract quite a few people to the community that are definitely NOT freethinkers. Some of these people would vote in our nonfiction polls, which could really have a negative impact on the integrity of our book selection process. We really need to stick with the freethinker market.

But are there really enough books that would be considered appropriate? Some of us do NOT like science fiction. I'm one such person. I have little to no interest in reading Isaac Asimov, unless it is his nonfiction. Not that I wouldn't read a science fiction book if it were to win the fiction poll, but I don't think it is fair to say that science fiction is necessarily more freethinkerish than let's say a mystery novel.

Maybe we can discuss this in tonights chat session...

I think that fiction could be good to have people read. We don't have to have fiction everytime, but I think that there are some works of fiction we should consider.

I suspect I'm one of those 'wrong kind of people' but believe with the vast array of contemporary fiction available out there you'd be able to select works in keeping with the site's aim and intent. No need to descend to Danielle Steel.

Looks like quite a few people like the idea of having a fiction forum, but please realize that we wouldn't be having fiction as part of our regular book selections. It would be a new forum where people can opt to participate in smaller discussions.

What would be a good name for this forum?
