While we're talking about the arts, I thought we ought to have a thread in which we talk about our latest run-ins. Use this as a place to talk about movies, music, paintings, comic books, whatever, that you've enjoyed the last couple of days.
I'll get us started...
While looking for something to do Wednesday evening I noticed that a mostly unknown musician that I like a lot was playing at a venue only about a mile from where I live. So I ditched out of work early yesterday and went to catch the show. Her name is Jolie Holland, and she writes what is essentially Americana -- a blend of traditionally American musical styles like blues, folk, New Orleans jazz and country. Probably the most interesting thing about her is music is her voice, which wavers, crescendoes and weaves through her songs in the oddest of phrasings. In concert, when she's on, it can make your skin crawl, but she's a fairly inconsistent performer. She doesn't make set lists, for one thing, which must drive the other musicians a little crazy, and she started a few the songs more than once, either to make comments about the writing of the song or because she had a momentary lyrical lapse. That said, her albums are great, particularly "escondida" and her newest, "Springtime Can Kill You." Worth checking out. |
