I love Margaret Atwood! I find myself buying her books when I find them in the bargain barrel too. I have not read, "The Day of the Flood", I'll have to check it out.
I'm currently reading, "Animals Make Us Human", Temple Grandin. It's interesting, she writes about the emotional health of not only dogs and cats, but horses and stock animals too. It's a great book for animal lovers.

I'm currently reading The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion: A New Abridgement from the Second and Third Editions by Sir James George Frazer and Robert Fraser.
I don't normally read just for fun. I try and buy books that are fun/enjoyable for the educational value. But I gotta tell you, reading this book is like trudging through a swamp with snow shoes on dragging a cinder block.
It was originally written in the late 19th century, it's over 1000 pages of micro print, single spaced, and was condensed down from like 5 or 6 volume! Sir James writting style is actually painful.
The book is dedicated to discovering the root of the myth of the cult of Diana, and touches on very many pagan religions and myths in order to understand how the Diana priesthood/king myth began.
I'm learning more about pagan religions/myth than any person needs to know. It is not "fun", but I'm going to finish it if it kills me...and it probably will.

Has anyone read "Howards End is on the Landing"?
Has anyone read "Howard's End is on the Landing"? I've seen some good reviews of it, but haven't read it yet.
Booklover7809 - you said you were reading "The Time Travellers Wife" - I've read that and loved it. It was fairly confusing, but really enjoyable. Have you seen the film? Apparently they have completely changed the ending, and people that have read the book first really didn't like it!
Suzanne - if you haven't read "Day of the Flood" you really have to! I have only read one other Margarette Atwood - The Handmaid's Tale, and I did like it, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as Day of the Flood (in my humble opinion, anyway!)

Literally just finished (about half an hour ago) The Road by McCarthy. Its a fantastic novel, terrificly inventive style, I just don't share the same opitmistic world view as the author, so the ending left it feeling a bit hollow for me. Next up is going to be Snow by Orhan Pamuk I think...

On my shelf next to the bed is H.G. Well's A Short History of the World, which I read with a friend when she comes over to visit (we're up to around the 11th century AD), The Great Books by Anthony O'Hear which is an introduction to classics like the Theban plays, Virgil, Constantine, Faust, etc., (which I put down yesterday as it was getting a bit heavy) and Persuasion by Jane Austen (for just relaxed and easily enjoyable reading).
In most cases I read with the Internet on so I can look up names, places, and events referred to in the book about which I have no background. Makes for slow reading but a richer exerience and after a year of doing it I find I need it less as my knowledge base grows.

Just finished reading CROSS BONES by Kathy Reichs (my review) and now I'm reading THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larsson. I've heard such great things about this Millenium Trilogy, and so far so good...

I finished Jason F. Wright's "Wednesday Letters" 2 days ago. It's quite a touching story about forgiveness. I, myself, do have some "issues" about forgiveness and self-acceptance, so it made me think a lot about my choice of living with / without them. ... Two weeks ago I read Harlan Coben's novels, one novel per day for almost 2 weeks. His novels are incredibly real. I don't know how to explain it, but I felt cold on my spine and felt like being watched and followed. I know it sounds strange, but I really felt it. Usually, I don't read many thriller but his novels are an exception. ... P.S. Zgârba, "High Fidelity" is one of my favourites. Hope you'll enjoy it. ^^
