I did notice the church bells bothering Gilbert so much. I think it was because he felt so guilty at going against God. It was like God was intruding.

You're probably right. It was haunting that G deliberately chose the most dangerous place to commit suicide. He really wanted to make sure he didn't mess this up, right?
