Józef Piłsudski and the Polish post office
Here is a little information about Józef Piłsudski and the Polish post office mentioned in "The Tin Drum".
Józef Piłsudski:
Quote:
For at least thirty years until his death, Piłsudski pursued, with varying degrees of intensity, two complementary strategies, intended to enhance Poland's security: "Prometheism", which aimed at breaking up, successively, Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union into their constituent nations; and the creation of an Intermarum federation, comprising Poland and several of her neighbors. Though a number of his political acts remain controversial, Piłsudski's memory is held in high esteem by his compatriots.
The Defense of the Polish Post Office in Danzig (Gdańsk) was one of the first battles amidst the Invasion of Poland as World War II began in Europe.
On September 1, 1939, Polish militiamen defended the building for some 15 hours against assaults by the SS Heimwehr Danzig (SS of the city Danzig), local SA formations and special units of Ordnungspolizei (Danzig police). All but four of the defenders who escaped from the building during the surrender were sentenced to death by a German military court as partisans on October 5, 1939 and executed.
