Well, thank God, this is not an issue troubling most Catholics (God knows there plenty more trouble than this) .
Consider this: The Mother actually arguing with someone regarding the spiritual destiny of her daughter's soul...why belong to a community of people that would create such disruption in your life- insult you, your family, your love for your daughter, and demand that you accept their verdict regarding what is possibly the most precious and valuable thing in your life. |

| Indeed I agree whole-heartedly with dissident. When I first came upon this article in the daily news I felt utterly disgusted. That one's spiritual fate be decided over a piece of wheat is utterly ridiculous. |

Unfortunately, these decisions of faith come from the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Yet another shining example of its antiquated ways.
Its like a bad government, the people gotta take control and push for change!

Exactly. As if a loving God is sitting in heaven smiling down on the decision to deny this little girl her first communion.
These are the types of things that helped to slowly erode my belief in a God. Believers can say that this human decision should not be a reflection on God, but I look at it differently. I don't know God and have never seen, felt, tasted, smelled, heard or otherwise sensed the existence of a God. Everything I have thought of as God has been brought to me via mankind, so I do put some weight on what they tell me.
If I am too believe these humans know what they're talking about when they say that this invisible supernatural being exists, I'm also forced to trust them when they tell me he doesn't like rice wafers used in place of wheat wafers. What else do I have to go on other than the word of man?

Yes...it cannot be selective. Those who are attributed with writing the bible claimed a direct link to god...he 'spoke' through them. God speaks through the clergy (and look what they have done!).
The church cannot cop out on a 'do as I say (when it seems good, not the bad stuff) and not as I do' type of mentality.
As secular thought has progressed, many inconsistencies have been revealed in church doctrines that were at one time accepted as god's law and word. This is why we have Apologetics.

The type of Christianity you describe, which sadly and accurately describes too many Christians, is the drive for Authoritarian Faith...the compulsion to demand Authority over the thoughts and actions of others.
It is an approach to Life that demands all of us submit to one Authority, the one they Worship...everyone has to Worship at their Temple...only they know the Way.
Authoritarian Faith locates its highest Virtue as "Servility"...to be Good, means to Submit, as well as Dominate those submissive to you.
Authoritarian Faith locates the gravest Sin as "Freedom"...to be Evil means to Rebel, as well as Liberate those rebelling with you.
Faith, as Im describing it, is the core driving spirit of purpose and obligation that mobilizes a person to act in the world.
Authoriarian Faith, this spirit of domination, is not limited to Churches...it is present everywhere, hard to get away from, and a real pain in the ass...deadly even...friggin wretched at times.
States, Militaries, Corporations, Tribes, Organizations, Hoods, Families....are all subject to the spirit of domination, and are dangerous havens for Authoritarian Faith. Lots of misery and mess that has nothing to do with Church.
This doesnt get Churches off the hook.
Thank God for the spirit of Liberation....another spirit not limited to just Church- thank God.

So you're down with the whole McDonalds idea then?
Communion is one of the pillars of Catholicism. Judging on the little information you just provided, I'd say that you place a relatively small amount of importance on it. You don't believe in transubstantiation and probably have different ideas about the nature of sacraments and grace. So I don't think you really understand the importance of the issue for catholics. But if Jesus didn't really care about re-enactment, why did he bother with the passover in the first place? Why did he replicate the meal once shared by the Jews? McDonald's buns do have wheat in them. If a priest blesses the meal, it would be valid...no? No wine, but one or the other would do...no?

| Well no actually but I won't go into that. ANd if was Germany then there would be wine. The question is just designed to see if Dissident thinks there is a limit. Communion should be taken very seriously |
