Avatar- The future of movie production.
I saw Avatar Friday night, and I have one word to say, amazing.
James Cameron did not fail to deliver. Every single detail was perfected, from the drip of ooze, to the movement of the forest.
The world is Tolkien worthy. I loved it. I can not say anymore.

My sister said pretty much the same thing, that James Cameron is a genius. I'm looking forward to seeing this moving after hearing from people who have watched it.

Re: Avatar- The future of movie production.
The movie itself was beutiful. Great creature and tech design throughout.
The story was a bit simple. Kind of "Dances with Wolves" on pandora. It wasnt bad, it was just a re-tread of an old formula. It was pretty decently executed, but if not for the amazing design of this film, no-one would be talking about it, put it that way.
If a sequel came out next week, i would definitely go to see it, if for the visuals if nothing else.
a couple things about the plot. How can guys on "horseback" weilding arrows possibly stand up to the equivalent of a fleet of Apache gunships? That was nonsense. So then they beat the humans and drive the rest off the planet. One phrase pops into mind. Orbital bombardment. They don't even have to be in the atmosphere to completely devestate the Na'vi.
I love these movies where a white guy joins an ethnic group and then become their leader and the only one who can save them. Why can't the "Last Samurai" be japanese? The last of the mohicans was a white guy... The next film we see along these veins will be "The last African Slave" starring Christian Bale as the oppressed minority who frees his black bretheren.
Lastly, every time somebody said "Unobtainium" i felt like they looked me in the face and said, slowly, so there was no chance for me to miss it. "You are an idiot."
the 3-d.
The recent resurgence of 3-d owes a lot to James Cameron and this very project. Though years ahead of old fashion red and blue paper glasses 3-d, this technology is still not perfect for a variety of reasons, and still only represents a half, or maybe quarter step forward, rather than the giant leap Cameron might have wished it to be.
There were 3 shots in the film that i thought the 3-d was really effective. One was looking over the edge of a tree limb, while very high up. I actually gripped the floor with my toes... The other two were ashes falling in front of my eyes, and another part where hands popped up on screen and i actually thought they belonged to the person in front of me for a second.
The second two events only distracted from the movie, but the first filled it's role as immersive.
A major hurdle for this technology is the inescapable juxtaposition of cinematic perspective and real world perspective.
No matter how convincing the 3-d is on-screen, it hits a border and you see the theatre and people around you in a different perspecive. The movie is not continuous with what you see around you, so it is never fully immersive. You would need a sort of virtual reality goggle set to pull this off effectively.
This movie was the final test of 3-d in my eyes. If anyone could have made the use of 3-d essential to the process, it should have been James Cameron and this film. I do not think that has come to pass. This version of 3-d will fall to the wayside as well. i would rather have seen Avatar in 2-d.

I saw it in 3-D and I really liked it. I don't think it would have quite been the same experience, for me, if I saw it in 2-D. It's a great movie and the details are amazing!

I still want to see it, if for nothing else the technical aspects. Generally big budget movies are geared towards young folks because they go to the movies much more frequently than people like me. My wife and I always talk about going to the movies, but rarely do. My sixteen-year-old son goes all the time. In fact, he's already seen Avatar. And so it's no wonder that many movies, especially the big blockbusters, are ultimately disappointing to me. While independent films such as Lahrs and the Real Girl or Sideways are the kinds of films I rave about.

I saw it in 2D (can't stand 3d glasses of any kind - they're a pain to wear over regular glasses!), and I thought it was really good. Not the best movie of the year, but still amazing.

Re: Avatar- The future of movie production.
i saw someone call this movie "Dances with Smurfs".
That's great.
I think if you are a fan of sci-fi, this is a movie you should definitely see. Best movie ever? Revolutionary moviemaking? emphatic no. But you should definitely go see it. Its an excellent peak into someone's imagination.

I do believe it is revolutionary simply for the technology used. The movie's plot is shallow and easily predictable. The plot was not the reason I saw the movie though. In the future all movies might be made with the same camera James made.
