I agree with you, Interbane. We want to draw in published authors with the "Author's Lounge" forum. These authors can interact with one another and with our members. The forum can be a resource for both published authors and aspiring authors. The point is that we really need to attract published authors to BookTalk.org and then provide them some sort of value other than a place to spam. As of right now we get a handful of authors joining ever week just to plug their books. And then they vanish never to return. We offer them nothing and this needs to change.
We'll create some other forums for our unpublished author members! That is next.
I'm glad you have a plan for the aspiring authors among us (myself included). I do not consider myself an author as I have nothing published or even near published, but I still write and having discussions about writing with other people to bounce ideas around with will certainly help and keep me from feeling discouraged and alone (which is how I've felt for a long time and not only hinders but cripples the writing process). I would like to see this forum for myself and everyone else who may feel as I do.

One issue from me is that book discussions should be for three months. Often people only read the book after it has been listed (yes, true) and once the official time of discussion is over it can dissuade people from commenting.
I agree with this, as well. It's daunting to only have a month and a half to read a book and then discuss it with clarity and reason. It takes some time to acquire books (moreso for some than others), and by the time one has read and thought on it long enough to make valid discussion points, it seems that the discussion has been abandoned. I have seen this happen to The Left Hand of Darkness, where by the time I even joined (which was well within the scope of its allotted discussion time), few people were participating at all, and now it is nearly dead in there. It seems as though no one is interested but also that the "discussion leader" and others who have read the book gave up on it. I'm not pointing fingers or trying to offend anyone, just trying to point out a seeming lack of interest in topics that have a deadline.

My only concern with naming the forum "writer's" lounge, instead of "author's" lounge, is that there may be confusion and cross posting with the "creative writing" forum. Is it wise to have two "writing" forums?

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
Chris,
I just posted several poems (each in their own threads) in the Creative Writing forum. Was that the right place to post them? I remember seeing something about wanting poetry to stay in the poetry forum, but not until after I posted, and I wanted to know whether or not they need to be moved now? Sorry if I caused any inconvenience.

I'm not really sure where your poems should go. We're learning as we go. Personal poetry fits in both the Creative Writing forum AND the A Passion of Poetry forum. Hmmm Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?
I'll make the newest two books as 3-month discussions. We've tried that in the past and the discussions fizzle out by the third month. We'll give it another go and see if that extra month helps.

Hmm, I don't know about an established forum about cookbooks, but, please feel free to start a thread in the general discussion forum about cookbooks. It could turn out to be popular. I just watched, "Julie and Julia", and it has inspired me to dust off my MOTHER'S copy of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and try some recipies. But, alas, I tend to dream quite a lot.

I am looking for the place where you are discussing what the next books might be....being new here I am not sure where to look, I thought I found it, but it was full of book suggestions by new authors mainly. I was just looking to see what the next ones might be...
It would be nice to have a week or so heads up BEFORE the topic opens so I can get the book, or borrow it from the library, and start reading it. Then when the topic opens I'll be ready.

Books for the non fiction discussion are now being posted for consideration, you can find those in the "Non-Fiction Book Suggestions & Polls" thread. You need to have 25 posts to suggest a book in this forum.
As far as fiction, we are discussing "Don Quixote" until June I believe, due to its heft. We may add another fiction selection, these suggestions would be in the "Fiction Suggestions & Polls" thread.
Hope this helps.

I was looking forward to the teen striping, I've never seen a striped teen, I wondered if it was like Daniel Striped Tiger....
Thanks for the heads up for the book picks. I don't know if I will get Don Quixote in time to catch up to everyone else...I may just wait and see what comes up next.

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
Don Quixote is truly a labor of love, as they say. Much less tedious than Moby Dick, but still a lot of reading time required. I can't say yet whether I think it's worth it or not; I suppose I have to say yes, just because of the knowledge and new perspective I've already gained. So, even if you don't get it in time for this discussion, I'd say it's worth your while to give it a read on your own, if you have the time. You can always post in the archives, and as long as I'm around, there'll be someone who'll respond.
Sorry about the tangent, I'll go quietly away now.
