What is Tom's role in the family? In the book?

I have drawn a similarity between the character of Lude and Tom Navidson. I think this plays into my "delusional Johnny" theory. (see the post "Jonny's Stories").
Spoiler
Both Lude and Tom die as saviors of sorts and both were a link to reality for the characters Johnny and Navy.
