Post Shoutbox
Am I the only one who is bothered by the infinite attempts of Shoutbox to do something -- load, apparently? And then I am haunted by Shoutbox when I attempt to leave BookTalk. I know it's cute, but it's also a gremlin. And I think it is preventing me from updating my profile.

Tom

I'm going to ask Indie about this issue you seem to be having. I've already spent over $100 trying to fix it and we are at a loss for a solution that doesn't involve replacing this shoutbox with a different program. There are other shoutboxs available, but we spent hours and hours trying to make them work for members with low screen resolutions. I'll talk to Indie about this again today.

I would love feedback from other people too. And not just negative feedback. Is the shoutbox working for everyone else? If so please say so. Maybe there is something that can be adjusted in your browser settings, Thomas. We'll see. We'll solve it somehow. Bare with me for a bit.

Thomas

I think you're having an issue with your browser. Everyone else seems to not have a problem. According to Indie the technology used to refresh the Shoutbox has been around for years and is used all over the web without incident.

What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Or are you using Firefox?

Sorry I missed your question. I don't know the version of IE, but the computer is less than two years old. Odd thing is, the search for Shotbox infects IE, and I have to start anew to get rid of it. Maybe the problem is caused by something I've downloaded.

Hi Tom,

I can assure you the shoutbox is not "infecting" anything, there is no malicious code in it whatsoever. As the person doing the coding work on this site, I find it a bit distressing when people throw around terms like this without understanding what they mean. It's enough to freak out more casual users, and just obscures the real issue.

The shoutbox does work by refreshing the content of the iframe it's in every couple minutes, this is how you get to see shouts that are made while you're on the site. The entire page shouldn't be refreshing, just the shoutbox itself.

If you're having problems after closing the tab you were on booktalk in, or after navigating away from the site, then there is definitely something wrong with your browser, or possibly with additional software you've installed on it.

I strongly suspect this is an IE issue. Can you please get us the version of IE you're using? You can do this by clicking Help then About on the menu bar near the top.

Could you also list any plugins or additional software you've installed on IE, and tell us what security software (antivirus and firewall, or "internet security" suite) you're using?

In the meantime, if you're using IE6 and need to disable the shoutbox from refreshing at all you could try this:

1. Click Tools in the IE menubar near the top, then click Internet Options
2. On the Security tab click Custom Level.
3. Scroll down to where you see "Allow META REFRESH" and change "enable" to "disable".
4. See if that solves your problem.

If you're using IE7 or IE8 then the process may be a bit different. Post back and let us know.

If you want some friendly advice, ditch IE and get Firefox. Not just because of this issue, but because it's a better, safer browser.

Sorry you're distressed, Indie, but surely there's an error in the Shoutbox code because the problem is unique to this site.

IE7
AVG 7.5
Google Tool Bar

And you may be right about Foxfire, but better the devil I know.

There is no error in the shoutbox coding. I've been over it both before you started experiencing this issue and after, to double check for anything that could cause your problem. It's a very simple script, there is nothing wrong with it.

It sounds like for whatever reason, your browser is having issues with frames. Have you tried disabling the meta refresh like I suggested above? That would at least alleviate the issue while you try to sort out the source of it.

It's very difficult to troubleshoot this kind of thing remotely, with only your description to go on. I notice you don't list a firewall application, are you using one? Do you periodically run applications like Spybot S&D to keep your system clean?

There's a reason I'm asking all this. If your computer has been compromised by something nasty affecting IE, then that could certainly cause IE to behave oddly. AVG is a good free antivirus, but it is not enough on its own (especially if you're browsing the net with IE).

Can you provide any other information that might help?

It's me trying to figure out how to type hexagrams. I thought I had found a quiet place to practice and by using the edit function wouldn't bother anybody. Sorry.

But how could you not know what a hexagram is? They are objects fundamental to traditional Chinese culture. Shorter versions are on the Korean flag. Sakis Totlis (once an active member of BookTalk) wrote The True Eye of the Tiger to explain certain aspects of the hexagrams, and I was thinking of volunteering to lead a discussion of his book, if there's any interest. Need to be able to draw hexagrams first, though.

I am using characters from the character map. Each hexagram should be a neat rectangle. To get a good appearance I need to try out different possibilities.

I have heard of them but never really knew what they were. Have you suggested his book to see if other people might want to read and discuss it? Sounds interesting.

Are you in communication with him? He sent me a photo of him drinking some Greek Ouzo out of a BookTalk.org coffee mug. I should post that sometime. If you talk to him tell him I said howdy.
