| It could be games. It could be intelligence. It could be war. Remember, the Enemy's Gate is Down! |

Eh, are you asking someone to tell you the meaning or do you just want to talk about it. First answer is, just read it through, mulitple times, and figure it out for yourself. You'll learn more.
My take on it:
It's been viewed as war a lot, and human nature as well. It has merits in both, I think the central plot of the book is a boy coming to grips with being a man, and asking himself if he has the willingness to kill in the interest of preserving life. The subplot, but one which probably is the reason the book is so popular, is the innovative design for training in combat and strategy, and the book's and the series comments on the running of warfare. I think you'd have to be crazy to not read the book if you ever planned on running a war. It might also be smart to find out where Orson got such ideas on the subject of warfare in the first place.
Central symbol? Definitely war. But the book means so much more than that and that is why it is a great work. |

| Perhaps it's Andrew coming to grips with being a genius, unique in that he is the best tool in the war for the continuation of mankind. He doesn't desire his role, but he is duty bound. Just throwing out ideas. |
