Mr P, I've just seen the exchange in the first video you've quoted, on BBC World News, I wanted to post about it but you beat me to it!
This is incredible, talk about openly lacking sophistication...
When I heard the woman from the public say she couldn't trust Obama because, she said "I heard, I heard he's..." I thought "paedophile"?
and she ends with "he's an Arab".
But Mc Cain's answer is worse!
He wanted to sound like a good guy and correct this misinformd voter with a firm "No Ma'am", and I expected "He's part Kenyan and part white", but obviously the answer to the accusation "he's an Arab" is: "He's a decent family man"! |

I know...like arabs are not decent people at all! But I think McCain was sincere and just finally had to say something to defend Obama. It was more that than anything else I believe.
If, after all this, McCain/Palin gets elected I will have really lost hope for America and the American people. He is way past his prime and not fit to lead...nor is Palin.

I agree that McCain sincerely wanted to defend Obama. The problem is that the woman in the audience used "Arab" as a synonym for "terrorist", and Mccain (sincerely) answered by responding at her level, which is worrying.
I wonder what other politicians would say answering an obviously politically incorrect question like that. I imagine many of them would find a way of deflecting the question, some might rebuke the member of the audience...
I imagine that if you are a Republican you're in a bind, because you don't want to sound like an intellectual, you want to show that you can talk with ordinary Americans at grassroot level, using their language to respond to their worries. From that point of view McCain did what was expected of him, but it's awful... I also object to "family man" to reassure the voter that the candidate is not a terrorist, I think it makes single people look like untrustworthy citizens-- here again, I suppose McCain shares the prejudices of his voters. |
