Hi. I'm Erica. I recently graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester MA with a BS in English and a teacher certification. I moved to NJ and am currently teaching high school English and coaching field hockey. I basically have no free time on my hands but need an outlet to ease my stressed out mind. So I figured I'd browse around for some on line book clubs, and now here I am.
I enjoy the American Lit classics and have a soft spot for Russian Lit (I will be jumping in on that Lolita forum shortly). Right now I'm reading contemporary stuff off of recommendations (Skinny Dip by Carl Hiassen and The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards) while preparing to teach The Crucible and Lord of the Flies to my students.
Nice to meet you all.

Welcome fellow newbie.
It's good to see so many who like the classics.
I used to work part time at a bookstore and it used to just astound me how many people would come in, see a book such as Pride and Prejudice and exclaim, "Oh look, it's a book!"
Just made me want to
One can rather excuse it among the young, but I swear to God, I overheard the following conversation between a fortysomething couple when spotting our Narnia display Nov. shortly before the movie's release.
She: "Oh, look honey, they made the movie into a book!"
He: "Wow, you would think they wouldn't want to do that and give away the ending to the movie."
Me to myself: "Where did they come from? Did they wonder in by mistake? Did they lose a round of truth or dare and are now being forced into the strange and confusing world of literature? Are they special bred, and if so for what purpose? |

Wandering in a wonder. Wondering where they wandered? Has there ever been a book written from a movie? And, have ever seen a movie after first reading the book that you weren't totally disappointed in?
I think the only one I haven't been is The English Patient perhaps because the book was so impossible to recreate on screen that the producers just used the idea and made a really good movie. Mind you, I did speak with someone who had not read the book prior to seeing the movie and found it a little confusing. |
