Part of this short chapter talked about the unreliability of memory, a topic most people are already familiar with. Though I am curious to read Daniel Schacter's The Seven Sins of Memory: How the Mind Forgets and Remembers, which Burton refers to in the footnotes.
Then he discussed the distinction between episodic memory and semantic memory. Though that distinction seems reasonable, the Wikipedia articles I linked to provided some more context about what he was talking about.
Finally, Burton defined two kinds of thought, semantic thought and perceptual thought. That definition was unsatisfying, in part because he introduced it by analogy with the two kinds of memory, a concept that I was first exposed to a few pages previously. Also, from his brief description, I couldn't come up with clear examples of semantic thoughts. His distinction between the two thought types seems ambiguous. |
