2 of my favorites are Caleb Carr...the Alienist...and Stephen L. Carter..New England White.(reading this now)..and his "Emperor of Ocean Park" ...as a first fictional book was quite good.

The Alienist by Caleb Carr, has become a master in its genre-- the inspector trying to make sense of the teeming streets of crime in New York at the turn of the previous century. A good book to take on a holiday-- much better than the many others which attempt to cover similar ground.

I agree Ophelia...but I believe it is in his style of writing that makes it so wonderful as opposed to the story content.

Hmmm....I need to find a place to check those books out! My favorite style of writing is a mix between J.R.R. Tolkien and Bram Stoker. If you were to look at my copy of Dracula/Frankenstein...the Dracula side is all worn and well-read and Frankenstein looks like it was read for a few pages before being forced to give up. -_- High school english teacher was horrible when it came to reading a proper novel or non-fiction. (How many teachers would punish a student for reading after the work was done other than that one is beyond me, but I was in trouble a lot in English because I loved my books more than the class...)

I love different authors for different reasons, and I think that as I get older my tastes have changed, but I still like to go back to my old favorites. The author whose voice speaks to me the most is Anne Lamott; I have been gobbling her books up, fiction and nonfiction, since I first read her Bird by Bird in 1997.
I also absolutely love Daniel Pinkwater's work, especially his "Larry" stories (yes I read kids stories sometimes) - it's funny and sensitive and really draws you in to his world. |
