BookTalk.org News: 6/23/2008
The Neil Shubin chat session is going to be changed to an email interview. Please submit your questions at http://www.booktalk.org/e-interview-questions-for-professor-neil-shubi n-t4912.html I'll send the questions to Professor Shubin when we have a sufficient quantity. Thank you Robert Tulip for the great questions you've posted. Hopefully we get plenty of other questions from other members soon.
Henry David Thoreau's "Walden" will be our July and August non-fiction book selection. There is no reason to buy this book unless you really want a hard copy. Numerous web sites offer the entire book for free online. And if you check out our recently updated LINKS page at http://www.booktalk.org/links.php you will see a new section for Audio Books & eBooks. There are some incredible sites there that are worth visiting. I personally just downloaded the following audio books (for FREE) so I can listen while working out at the gym or when I first get into bed at night:
Henry David Thoreau - Walden
Charles Darwin - Origin of Species
Daniel Defoe - Robinson Crusoe
Joseph Conrad - Heart of Darkness
Thomas Paine - Common Sense
Plato - Apologies
All of this for free! And there are literally thousands of Audio Books and eBooks available absolutely free. It is a bit amazing to be honest. So check out our LINKS page and explore some of those sites. There is nothing in it for me or BookTalk.org if you visit and enjoy these sites. I'm providing them simply as a free resource so my fellow book lovers can enjoy what I'm enjoying. If you know of valuable sites you'd like added to our LINKS page let me know.
June has been a slow month on our forums. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it is due to the summer arriving and people having other obligations or interests.
I've got a pretty amazing book here in my hands that I want to share. Several days ago Guy P. Harrison mailed me several copies of his new book, "50 reasons people give for believing in a god" to give away to members.
I'm looking for two members that are talented writers (and thinkers) that are interested in doing reviews of this book. If you agree to do a review I'll mail you the book for free. Yes, you get to keep the book. You read the book and then post your review on the BookTalk.org forums. Eventually we'll have a "Book Reviews" section and your review of this book will be featured in that section.
I'd really like to see your reviews added to Amazon.com and I'll help the two BookTalk members that do these reviews post their reviews on Amazon.com. I can honestly say that of all the books I've read about this subject "50 reasons people give for believing in a god" is one of the very best. Guy P. Harrison walks through every single argument you've ever heard (or at least that I've ever heard) for the existence of a god or gods and examines them with clear thinking and a critical mind. His demeanor is respectful and civil and not at all condescending. If this subject is of interest to you then email me about doing a review. You're going to love this book and you might see this as an "Editor's Pick" very soon.

The last news item I'd like to mention is our need to start the selection process for our August & September 2008 Fiction book. There is now a thread up where you can start making suggestions. Visit http://www.booktalk.org/suggestions-for-our-aug-sept-fiction-book-t491 7.html to tell us what you'd like to read as our next fiction book.
Again, June has been rather slow for us on the forums so consider getting involved in some of the discussions.
Happy Reading! |
