What was interesting about the hedgehog gene is that it's only a type of genetic switch. The DNA contains all of the information to build a person but it relies on switches to tell cells what needs to be produced. When hedgehog was shot into the skate - something deep inside me was hoping for a mouse hand to be produced - did anyone else hope for that?
But it was only a switch - asking the skate DNA to do the same thing that it asked the mouse DNA to do - "Make your appendage here." |
