Hello, My name is Hamiete...(female)
I have been meaning to join in the fun, but just haven't until now... I live in St. Louis...Was out in the area recently, stopped at a used book store and picked up a $2.50 used copy of George Orwell's "1984"...just starting to read it... Has anyone read "Isthmeal" by Daniel Quinn? Or how about "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"? There was my intro... Hamiete |

Hi Hamiete,
I've read some of "1984" a VERY long time ago and I only remember some bits and pieces of it. Maybe it's time for me to re-read this book...
Anyway, I just wanted to say "Hi".
Kostya. |

| Several of us have considered reading 1984 and creating a forum for its discussion. The idea was susplanted by the desire to discuss The Satanic Bible, but I for one am interested in doing 1984. I promised myself that 1984 would be the next book I read...but that was about 5 books ago. Arg. |

I read Ishmael and thought it was excellent. Interesting take on Genesis therein. I made it halfway through "Zen" but never finished it, so I'm really not sure where he was going.
When Christopher Hitchens introduced "Why Orwell Matters" last year I attended a seminar which was interesting. I haven't read 1984 but did find interesting parallels in Animal farm.
Welcome. |

Hamiete, Welcome! I'm new too. I have read 1984 and Animal Farm by Orwell. I remember Animal Farm more because I re-read it a few years ago. Both were required reading in school. Both were great. Since everyone is talking about 1984, I may just read it again too. I haven't read either of the other two books you mentioned. |
