Everyone's noticed the uproar caused by Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. Pundits say, bad news for Obama as independent voters and unsure Democrats shy away after Wright calls down God's damnation of the U.S. for crimes against minorities and other atrocities.
But what is the difference between Wright and right-wing loonies like Pat Robertson? George Bush never had to repudiate Pat Robertson in order to avoid losing votes. Yet when Robertson said that God would respond to the Dover, DE evolution decision with fire and brimstone (or tornadoes or something), he was doing just what Wright has been so vilified for doing.
I don't want to defend Wright just because I have sympathy for some of his causes, while having none for Robertson's. The concept of God that both have, as a vengeful watcher, is a problem. Whatever bad things humans may do, the offense is not to God but to humans. Saying that God is offended is just a diversion.
