Hi everyone!
I'm about to start a book called Out of Chaos by Louis J. Halle.
I've read Men and Nations by this author and it was an eye opening experience. He has a way of putting extremely complicated concepts into simple ideas that add up chapter by chapter in a very systematic method that the reader doesn't feel as a burden but rather a very intelligent and empathetic helping hand. In the end you get perfectly inside his head. It's really great to have that honesty - because it helps you make a better decision about everything you've read.
Now, I'm not vouching for Out of Chaos - but it is his seminal work. So I'm guessing it's going to be better than Men and Nations. You can get the book really cheap too! I've seen it on Amazon for like 2 bucks. It normally goes for like 12 though - as high as 16 with shipping (hardback).
Here's what the book is about:
In this, the crowning achievement of his career, Professor Halle presents a survey of all basic knowledge. As it unfolds under the reader's eyes, there emerges from it the vision of one universal order that rises above the underlying chaos in which our lives are still so largely immersed. By bringing together in one perspective the physical universe, the evolution of life within it, the emergence of mind, and the fruits of the mind's creativity, Halle reveals, step by step, what presents itself at last as a seamless whole. We see how order arises out of the fundamental chaos represented by the Uncertainty Principle in physics, or by the "Extended Uncertainty Principle" that applies to all aspects of being. "The realm of being," Halle writes, "is meaningful to the extent that we are able to view it comprehensively. Our understanding depends on the breadth of our knowledge, for everything, as we shall see, tends to shed light on everything else." Describing the process of writing this book, he adds: "I have felt like one who, puttting the meaningless bits of a picture-puzzle together, seems meaning gradually emerge of itself. (Who, for instance, at the outset of this undertaking, could have imagined that a continuous line would connect quantum mechanics with James Joyce's "Ulysses," thereby illuminating the significance of the latter?)" After the immense survey, which constitutes a general education in itself, Halle concludes with certain implications for what may make the life of the individual meaningful.. First Edition/First Printing Stated. Hard Cover. Fine/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Grey Cloth-Covered Boards.
Please let me know if anyone would like to read it with me. We can read it together and write each other our thoughts! |
