I've been a lurking fan of this site for years, and usually come to see if anything I've just read has been discussed. By coincidence I've just started reading The Stuff of Thought, so I'll see if I can catch up and participate in the latter part of the discussion.
My main reason for finally joining in is that I've just come back from a holiday, and, for the first time since my kids were born, I was able to sit back and devour a bunch of books without being disturbed, because my kids are finally old enough to sit beside me and devour their own books. It was bliss. Unfortunately I can't find any threads on the books I was interested in discussing, so maybe I'll start some of my own.
What else can I tell you? I'm a third generation atheist who naively thought everyone else was an atheist, until I grew up and discovered that I was in the minority with regard to religion.
I'm a vocational counselor who wishes she'd studied robotics or neurology instead of sociology at college. While other parents push their kids to become the artist/musician/sports star they never were, I'm surreptitiously pressuring mine to go into engineering.
I chatted with Loricat during one of my "lurks" about a year ago and found out that we're from the same area. It's nice to see she's still active here.
I'm looking forward to joining you.

Hi Helen, and welcome to Booktalk!
It's lovely to see another person making the plunge from lurker to posting member.
Thank you for writing an introduction and for your input about Naomi Klein's book. I haven't read it, but I have read some articles by this writer, and she attracted my attention.
You might consider suggesting this book for our next non-fiction read: http://www.booktalk.org/non-fiction-book-suggestions-amp-polls-f4.html |

What planet are you from? And how to I get there!? You thought everyone else was an atheist? I can't imagine growing up around primarily atheists. Were you isolated from the general population? I'm actually being serious. With 80% or more of the general population believing in a God or gods I can't picture you not being exposed to theism just as soon as you were able to understand human communication.
I'd like to hear more. |
