I just did the +Karma thing. I think it is a good idea Chris and one a day is OK by me.
Can you click - negative Karma as well as +Karma? Not that I would want to give anyone negative Karma, but it might show one, if one had trodden on some one's toes.
I often wonder if I am offending anyone, but I still think it is important to be honest and upfront. So if I got negative karma points I would know to be a little less forthright.
A little less waffle!!! Did I hear you say?

Man...If we had this years ago, I wonder just HOW negative my Karma would be! Although, knowing me, I would do all I could to keep the negatives coming once provoked.
lol

Somehow I got 2 karma (or is it karmas?) I am not sure if this is a moderator thing of if someone gave me the karma.
At any rate it is a cool new feature.
Use it wisely everyone.

Why not try and see where this new idea leads?
For the moment, the following quote is just too hard to resist:

This Karma thing is interesting. I must assign my karma carefully if I only get one per day |

You said 'Man' - therefore you are an old hippy bod!!
I have just given you a +Karma - just to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative - Dude! |

I have been in several communities, some of which have karma. The major problem with such a system is that some members may be generally disliked by a group of active members, get a large negative karma count. This is a serious turn off to such individuals which have left the site.
Don't get me wrong, he wasn't a mean bastard. He was just generally disliked by a handful of members who logged in everyday, and decided to focus on degrading his karma by 5 to 10 everyday. Even his good posts didn't help him bring the karma back up, so he left.
Just a cautionary tale for the rest of us if we want other communities to stay active. |

Well...I think it is safe to say that I am the one here that tends to ruffle feathers...and I am at 10. So I think we have a good, responsible group here that can think above the base intincts to trash someone to the point of arrogance.

Yes, Mr P, I'd come to the same conclusion, but thanks Saudama for mentioning this.
I hadn't even thought that the "minus" sign for karma could be used, so maybe this is something to keep in mind as needing watching in case some friction occurs in the future. |

While I love the new Karma feature you guys are going to be seeing much more soon. There are many new "mods" that have been added, yet not made available to members. The Karma mod actually works in conjunction with the "cash" mod. The cash mod is a way members can earn community currency, which I believe we are going to simply call "credits." Until I fully understand how to use some of these new mods that will remain disabled.
We also have an entire encyclopedia system installed, but not yet activated. It will be called the "BookTalk Wiki," and it is the exact same software employed by Wikipedia.com. So we will have our own wikipedia system right on BookTalk. Select members will be able to add book reviews, essays, links, definitions, author interview transcripts, and much more. |
