While standing at the magazine rack, I scanned an article in the newest Scientific American about a global warming effect I had not heard about. The article said that a rise of 200 feet in sea level was possible as a result of polar ice breaking off at a more rapid rate than historically, raising sea level like ice cubes in a glass of water. The ice would not have to melt in order for this catastrophe to occur. The cause is apparently the melting of surface ice, the water seeping through to grease the skids of the ploar ice that naturally tends to inch its way toward the sea and eventually break off as icebergs.
