Hi.
Just finished reading the first one hundred pages of "Out Stealing Horses" and wished I had someone to dicuss it with. So it was off to Google to locate an online book group.
I've been thinking about joining a group for some time now. I am a sixtish female, living in real upstate New York. I am a retired high school English teacher with a variety of interests.
Completed reading Russo's "Bridge of Sighs" a few days ago--so anyone out there reading either "Bridge of Sighs" or "Out Stealing Horses"? I would love to hear from you.

I haven't read either of the books you mention, but I 've just checked Russo's Bridge of Sighs on amazon and it certainly sounds interesting.

I certainly do not feel comfortable navigating around booktalk. I really don't know what I am doing.
"Bridge of Sighs" is typical Russo. I've read all of his books. His books are character driven; that is the characters meander around the landscape taking their sweet time to reveal themselves.
In answer to your question about Thomaston--yes, setting does remind me of where I grew up--small upstate town. And also, the characters remind me very much of people I knew who wandered the strets of my hometown. |

| I live in Auburn, NY about an hour away from Canandaigua in the Fingerlakes region. I just joined today. I love self help personal growth books. Looking for a book club like that. Just finished Riches Within by Dr. John Demartini, and theKey by Joe Vitale. |

Hello book crazy,
I haven't read the two books you mention, or other books from about self growth, but I've just checked Riches Within at amazon.
It seems to me that the link between it and what we are doing at Booktalk is this: we choose books because of the knowledge they bring and the potential for discussion they have; for example The Lucifer Effect, by Philip Zimbardo, makes you reassess what you know (or thought you knew) about human nature and society.
A work of fiction, like Conrad's Heart of Darkness, though chosen for its literary value, leads to the examining of aspects of our history, and as the author puts it the darkness within.
So this leads, in some measure, to personal growth, as would other examples of human endeavour-- I hope. |

Marilyn, please feel free to ask questions if you need help navigating the site. I've tried to make the forum descriptions as clear as possible, but I might be falling short in this area. I suggest you skim the list of available forums and read the descriptions. This would be a good start. Then, just start posting and learning as you go. Over time it will all fall into place I'm sure.
