Sounds to me like the images are free, but you must save and then upload them to your site. Hotlinking without permission is illegal, and many sites are using countermeasures like the image you see at this link.
If anyone needs help uploading their avatar just post about it and I'll see what I can do. |

I believe the picture you are uploading has to be no more than 100x100 pixles. If it is larger, it will not show up.
