The second part of the book didn't hook me the way the first part did. The background was interesting, as it portrayed daily life in Kabul during the Afghan wars, first against the Soviets and later during the Civil War. However, the main story and characters weren't that exciting.
Now, the ending of the second part was very dramatic. I was wondering how Mariam and Laila would end up in each other's lives. |

I am glad you are such a constant reader, Julian.
I'm going to wait until you or a newcomer get to chapters 29 to 31, when Rasheed takes Laila as his second wife, and then there will be a lot to say about the theme, and also the style, which gets more interesting, as for example the description of Rasheed's eating habits and table manners. |

I finished it up about a month ago.
I didn't realize people here hadn't finished reading it - I'll be cautious as to what I 'give away'.
Seeing as how the subject has already come up, it's probably safe for me to say that I was pleased when the two women became friends. |

Thank you very much for your input Carly, a fresh viewpoint was much needed in the Splendid Suns threads.
You don't need to worry about other people not having finished the book: in fact the discussion had been left unfinished because there was only one person -- apart from me -- who was interested.
Carly, would you like to write an introduction and tell us a little about yourself?
See you later I hope |

OMG!
You're asking me to tell about myself?
You must know by now that given encouragement, I talk a blue streak.
Oh . . . ok . . . I'll tell about myself.
Where shall I do that - here? In the 'general' discussion? |
