I must say I feel much better after reading this! I saw the film with a colleague of mine who knows more about Dylan and his time than I do, and then we spent about 20 minutes explaining what we had understood to each other (the explanations were mostly hers). I was so annoyed I decided I was not going to read anything about the film on the net (something I rarely do, I hate not understanding.)
Don't misunderstand me though, I love Dylan's music, but somehow my few LPs from the sixties and seventies disappeared years ago, and I ended up not replacing them with CDs. Well, perhaps I'll do something about it now.
The film made me think of Joan Baez's autobiography, which I read many years ago. From what I remember, the only thing she had to say about Bob Dylan was something to the effect that what had been said about any social or political message in Dylan's songs was purely speculative (as opposed to her songs, which were political).
She didn't explain, and I wondered if she was jealous. |

Thanks for the quick reply on Ulysses, Ross. Alas, I, like Ophelia, may fall into the D category (at least it’s not an F—passing grade for trying, eh?) at the end of my life. But, for now, I still intend to finish it some time. I’m not sure if I want to read it so much as conquer it, at this point.
Ophelia, I was wavering on making the time to see I’m Not There. Mostly I was interested in Blanchett’s performance. But, after your and Ross’s reviews, I think I’ll just put it on my “to be sure to rent” list. |
