Our Church just recently celebrated the third week of Advent by beginning our worship ceremony with the lighting of the third candle: the candle of Joy. This followed the candles of Hope and Love. The fourth will be the candle of Peace, and the final center one will be the Christ candle. With each lighting an individual, or couple, or family are invited to address the congregation, saying something about the meaning Hope, Love, Peace, Joy or Christ in their life...then they light the candle. The congregation then joins in song, sharing a hymn and ending in silence.
Advent is the season of joyful expectation: in the midst of the darkest, coldest time of year- there is promise of a light that will change the world. Christians across the planet use this time to reflect upon that promise: its power and presence in their life, as well as their challenge to participate in this world-changing task.
The Gospels tell a story of a man that was imprisoned by the King for exposing abuses of royal power. His name was John, called the Baptiser. John sent his disciples to find another man named Jesus and find out if he was the one they were waiting for: the long-awaited messiah, bringing God's liberatory reign of peace and justice. When asked by John's disciples if he was the one, Jesus replied: do the blind see, the crippled walk, the diseased healed, the deaf hear, and the dead raised?
This is what Advent waits for. |
