One can only hope. However, the real impetus for this approach may be that the technique, called "reprogramming," appears to be much simpler and less expensive than the cloning technique used with embryonic stem cells.
It's early days yet. I'm sure research will continue with both techniques for the immediate future. There is a cancer risk associated with the new approach. The scientists involved say they think it's something that can be avoided.
Besides, I think the "consternation of the religious masses" has been overplayed in the media. There are many religious people who don't have a problem with embryonic stem cell reseach, especially since the embryos in question are the discards from fertility clinics and will ultimately be disposed of if they are not used for this purpose.
However, if the new approach works as advertised, I'm all for it. And if it eases the ethical concerns of those who have them, so much the better.
