Forum Format

We've been discussing how best to structure out book discussions. For this book I am going to create a chapter thread for each chapter. We don't want any spoilers being revealed by readers accidentally entering into a thread that is discussing a chapter or section they have yet to read. So expect chapter threads shortly. As always you are free to create your own threads, but please warn other readers for spoilers! A "spoiler" is a bit of information that shouldn't be known until a certain point in the book. For example, you would not want to create a thread discussing the fact that Professor Bullfinch killed the Accountant in the Ballroom with the Broomstick when that fact is something that readers won't know till the end of the book. Telling them it before they get to that chapter will ruin the story for them. So think ahead.

Did you know that they are making a movie from this book, and I think it's supposed to come out sometime later this year. I was just reading about it, I had no idea. Maybe I am the only one to just find this out, and if so then I guess I am late in the game. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are co-producing it, and I think I read that Pitt is supposed to play the lead male role, whoever that is because I haven't started reading the book yet. I wonder if they will do the book any justice.

I'm struggling to find a way to structure this forum. The chapters are not numbered so I am considering simply breaking the book down by page number. Also, there is a handy "Reading Group Guide" at the very end of the book, making the job of the discussion leader a breeze. Anyone wanting the job?

Chris, what exactly is involved of a discussion leader? I have been thinking about it since we voted on this book. It's the summer so I have a lot of time on my hands, but I haven't been involved in the discussion of a book yet. I am still so new. I searched for discussion questions online to help give me ideas if I took on the job. I am still unsure if I want to take the job on my first book discussion, but no one else seems to be stepping up to the plate. I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about it, but if someone else wants the job... go ahead and chime in.

There isn't a whole lot to it. Simply do your best to be active in the book discussion. Periodically create threads - perhaps asking those discussion questions you found.

I have always thought that frequest short posts are better than fewer big posts. As a discussion leader you are doing your job just by posting a line or two regularly. Try to keep the discussion humming along.

And don't feel obligated to respond to any and all posts. Pick which posts you want to discuss and then make a reply. Put it this way. Any member that actively participates in any of our book discussions is acting as a discussion leader for that book. Think of it that way.

Being a discussion leader is the opposite of "lurking," which is reading but not posting. Many people read our books and then are too afraid to make posts. You might be shocked at how many emails I get every day. There is a whole group of members that don't post, but do read our books and our members posts. A discussion leader needs to not be shy and just post. It is that simple.

I do have only one problem with being a discussion leader for this time around. I will be moving to Florida in July. I am driving there and stopping in New Orleans on the way for a few days. I will be without a computer for a good 2 weeks after July 4th. Then once I get there and unpack, I am going to be stuck with dial up for another few weeks because that is all my dad currently has. I have already talked to him about getting high speed to we will just have to see how soon he gets it. So the month of July I won't be around for at least half of it. What do you think about this?

I think that would be ok...I mean...I went two weeks without posting in the Enders Game discussion.

This is not a heavy lifting job...your focus should just be to give the discussion a boost by posting and, what I like doing, asking open ended questions or tossing the potato so to speak.

I was thinking this could be a problem for this book because it is only a 2 month run ending at the end of July.

I agree. Discussion leading is not like military duty. Granted, you will be shot if you screw it up, but overall it is fun and not to be taken too seriously.
