Thanks to Rose, aka irishrosem, personally contacting Professor Haiman, we now have the following author Bio to offer to discussion participants. Rose has volunteered to lead this book discussion and providing a Bio is a fantastic start. Thank you.
Quote: Franklyn S. Haiman is John Evans Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at Northwestern University and an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco. He has been a Fulbright Visiting Lecturer in Communication Law at the University of Paris, France, as well as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of New Mexico, the University of Washington, and San Francisco State University. He has also lectured at over 60 other universities in the United States as well as five in Japan and been a visiting scholar at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He attended Case Western Reserve University as an undergraduate, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned is M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Northwestern University.
He has served for nearly 50 years in leadership positions in the American Civil Liberties Union, including the presidency of the ACLU of Illinois for 11 years, 31 years as a member of the national Board of Directors, and nine years as national vice-president. Since his retirement from the Board of Directors he has served as a vice-chairperson of the ACLU National Advisory Council.
Professor Haiman has authored eight books and dozens of journal articles. His volume entited Speech and Law in a Free Society (1981) received a Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association and a Golden Anniversary Prize for most Outstanding Scholarly Book of the Year from the National Communication Association. He has also been named as a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association.

| It was interesting to read that Haiman "served for nearly 50 years in leadership positions in the American Civil Liberties Union". I wonder how that perspective shaped the way he describes First Amendment issues. |
