What is a Book?
Quote: Here's a really hard question: What is a book?
It's hard, because for 500-odd years, nobody's had to think about it. A book has been a self-contained unit of a lot of words on a good number of bound pages. But that might not be the answer anymore — or at least not the only answer.

I saw Doctorow's free download, but passed on that, as he is not one of my favorite authors.
And call me old fashioned, but book is NOT a verb. No matter how avant guarde you want to be, and how you create other activities to do with a book and it's contents, a book IS ...a self-contained unit of a lot of words... and if you start messing with that format you no longer have a book. You have something different, maybe even something wonderful, but what you don't have is a book.
Now, having said all that in my personal Luddite rant, what I do think is a beginning, an evolution if you will, of the traditional book format is (are? I'm lost in the syntax) a lot of one subject websites. For instance, I was perusing a web site on World War I...the Great War... little did they know... and it is all divided into 'chapters' if you will. There is no one composite page. Every topic has it's own section, it's own clickable. And every section has within it interactive stuff to do, see, experience on that one topic. For me, this is the new book.
But it still isn't a VERB!!!

Sounds like you were 'booking' around that website...
