Senator Byrd uses his 50 years in Congress to get right to what he considers most important: That since Reagan, he has seen the Constitution undermined to such an extent that he feels we citizens are in fact, no longer represented by a democratic process that the framers of the Constitution intended.
He blasts the Bush administration for cutting the last fragile strings by their insistence on Bush having authority to go to war whenever he chooses, not when Congress authorizes.
He also cuts no slack for the members of Congress who have votes to give up their sacred right and duty by authorizing Bush's war power. He castigates, rightly, the congressional members who have abandoned their obligation to be the controllers of the purse.
Just as this book was coming out, the news of the budget broke, with its many leeches, one of which was Byrd's amendment, which called for a study of the American constitution in schools.
Thank You, Sen Byrd
I may seem partial, I am, I may seem opinionated, I am. I am as old as the Senator and have been a witness to the deteriorating participation in our government by the people elected to participate. Through the lack of campaign finance reform we have allowed a focus on the reelection instead of government. Through a lack of will to create good legislation, we have allowed special interests to saturate our legislation. Through a vacuum in the Congressional will,we have allowed the Presidential office to move into a sphere the framers of the Constitution intended to be forbidden fruit.
Sorry for the oration, Sen Byrd says it better. |
