If it were not for the desire in humans to explore and expand, we would still be in Africa! Mars would be a great addition to our knowledge...and would be a stepping stone to other things. Of course it will take time. I do not think it is justified to spend money at any cost to make it happen as soon as possible (although that view makes it SUCK for me, for I will not see it happen). Hey, if we can spend a trillion bucks looking for WMD in Iraq we can send people to Mars! At the rate we are inventing new dollars these days it would be a drop in the ocean to create the funds to go. And, humanity needs such a shot in the arm of it's imagination I think. Just one of the good arguments in favor is that for the survival of humanity staying on the Earth only is like placing all your chips on 22 red at a roulette wheel. Going to the moon or Mars would be like putting the stack on 22/23 and getting out to the moons of Jupiter or even interstellar expeditions would be like placing the chips on black. We are human and this means that no matter our geography we will always carry the seeds of our own destruction with us, but as we branch out and spread we raise our overall odds of remaining alive, because the odds will still be stacked for the house, but it would be like playing in several casinos at once.
