I was watching a documentary on "Animal Engineers" and was particularly impressed by the "Trap Door Spider". These spiders are so cool! They burrow deep into the ground and then build a trap door that covers the entrance to the lair. The door is so perfectly made that it is almost impossible to spot if you are not familiar with the spider and not actively looking for it.
The spider may throw web lines out from the lair as a sort of trip wire to alert it of potential prey, but this is not necessary as the spider has such a keen sense of vibration detection. It can detect, by ground vibration, the size of the animal, even as small as an ant.
If the trap door is located by a predator (wasp was mentioned) the spider will hold onto the door to keep it shut. The spider can exert a force of something like 100 times it's body weight to keep the door shut.
