Can we please carve out the ignorant mid-west and south? Please? Do they really do any of us any good?

God vs. Darwin? Or Reality vs. Fantasy?

Quote:
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (Reuters) - For the fourth time in eight years, the Kansas Board of Education is preparing to take up the issue of evolution and what to teach -- or not teach -- public school students about the origins of life.

After victory at the polls in November, a moderate majority on the 10-member board in the central U.S. state plans to overturn science standards seen as critical of evolution at a board meeting on Tuesday in Topeka.

New standards would replace those put in place in 2005 by a conservative board majority that challenged the validity of evolution and cited it as incompatible with religious doctrine.

The 2005 action outraged scientists across the United States, with the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Teachers Association refusing a request by Kansas to use copyrighted material in textbooks.

Voters in last year's elections then swayed the balance of power on the board to moderates.

George:

I did put IGNORANT in there for a reason...people like you are just Jim Dandy! But alas, it seems much of this crap comes from the areas I mentioned.

Texas in particualr worries me what with GWB and the states control of textbook content!!

Please don't. I live in the south. I don't know about the rest of you, but it's definitely good for me. :-)

Besides, though it seems ridiculous that evolution is such a contentious issue at the beginning of the 21st century, at least this Kansas board is trying to undo the damage done by their predecessors. So maybe there is hope for the mid-west as well.

I don't think Floridians count in this context. Most of Florida's citizens are imports after all. ::115 ::129

Update. Looks like we win another one...fer now!

Kansas board boosts evolution education

Quote:
TOPEKA, Kan. - The Kansas state Board of Education on Tuesday repealed science guidelines questioning evolution that had made the state an object of ridicule.

The new guidelines reflect mainstream scientific views of evolution and represent a political defeat for advocates of “intelligent design,” who had helped write the standards that are being jettisoned.

The intelligent design concept holds that life is so complex that it must have been created by a higher authority.

Mr. P: OK ... I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about carving out entire regions. Texas is a concern. Think Mexico would take it back?::204

Irishrosem: I don't think Floridians count in this context. Most of Florida's citizens are imports after all.

Would that it were true. However, one can never discount the "Bubba factor" in Florida politics. Let's not forget that it was the political hacks who run this state that bestowed the presidency on an incompetent in 2000. Or consider that I can look out my front window and watch rockets and spaceships being launched from the Cape, yet the school board in our county thinks the best way to teach sex education to our young people is with an abstinence only approach that combines misinformation with no information, putting not just their health but their very lives at risk.

No, I'm afraid Florida is no bastion of enlightenment. There are folks trying to change that, but, so far at least, we seem outnumbered.

OK ... I'll climb off my soapbox for now. ::82
