I hope to see this question revived a few days after we default on trillions in debt we have racked up trying to live a sybaritic consumer lifestyle while we simultaneously pursue a colonial empire and operate a credit card domestic policy.

My bet is that a few days after the coming default we will see the worst president in our history impeached.

You are joking right? Trying to bait the new guy?

Colonial empire = hegemony in the UN with attendant arm twisting and blackmail, plus the presence of troops in 135 nations. The brass balls to dictate to sovereign nations their policies, foreign and domestic, you want Iran to stop enriching uranium? Stop doing it yourself, it is not as if we do not have enough to destroy the globe a thousand times over. We demand internal changes to foreign lands on nothing more than our current political winds via our mastery of the IMF and World Bank. We arm the tribes and nations of the world, and we dispense largess such as food or AIDS drugs with a sharp eye to the kneeling of the those that need it.

Sybaritic lives; we live in a consumer utopia, sucking up a vastly disproportionate amount of the resources and becoming very angry when other whose lands we strip of commodities get uppity enough to ask for a fair value. Sybaritic in the sense that by comparison most of the world lives on $2 per day, and even in our own hemisphere there are countries that we disapprove of that have to get by on less than half of that, Cuba and Nicaragua for example. More than 40,000 people die from poverty and malnutrition every single day that you type on your keyboard, so keep typing, they are going to keep dying. AIDS is about to dwarf that number, and BOTH are preventable with relatively small investments. Do the math, with nearing 100,000 per day dying because of poverty that is getting up around 40 million dead people a year. That is genocide of neglect while we build new power stations just to feed all our new plasma TV's. England has had to build two new nuclear plants just for the increased electric draw from these TV's. That investment could have saved millions of people for years, it could have rebuilt the tsunami regions of the Indian Ocean basin.

Debt and our credit card domestic policy. Well, if I have to explain this to you then you are never going to understand the issue, because you have decided NOT to understand it. I have a Bachelor degree in Finance, I watch every single day the nuances of the markets globally. The USA is going into debt at the rate of more than $5 BILLION every single day weekends and holidays included. Have you become so jaded that you no longer even understand what billion means? That we have to talk about the federal government deficits in terms of trillions in national debt alone is appalling, but you add to that the cooked books of the fed and treasury and BLS, and the off the books issues like the wars, and the 800 billion this year in trade deficits which we give out IOU's for and the collected mess is a picture of utter ignorance of the sources and uses of money. Just since Bush took (I DO mean TOOK!) office we have more than tripled an already bad debt situation, because aside from the debts racked up in our name by trade and by reckless governance, we consumers have decided that 5, 6, 800,000 is a great price for a house, and the GOVERNMENT backed mortgage debt is now over 17 trillion. Hedge funds are now invested to the tune of 300 trillion dollars, and if you would understand ANYTHING at all about debt you should understand this, 300 trillion dollars is more than several times all the money of all the nations of the world combined. Just for hedge funds.

So, my NeoConman friend, try to be a little more polite in your discourse and disagreement when you argue with your betters on subjects that you have not even the energy to Google before commenting on. It is one of the great things about this site that the trolls of the fascist party do not get a toe in the door, be nice or be gone.

I have to go with George W. Bush as the worst in my lifetime.

The man seems to be an exercise in Orwellian doublethink.

He professes to have deeply held beliefs about democracy, freedom and human dignity.

Yet at the same time he has acted as if he believes the executive should have unlimited powers in a national security crisis as defined by the executive himself.

He has shown a fundamental disrespect for the legislative process by adding signing statements that seem to imply that he will enforce the laws only as he chooses.

He has assaulted the separation of church and state with his "faith-based initiative" and promoted a religious agenda at the expense of the public health in the form of "abstinence-only" programs and opposition to stem cell research.

He has stated that we do not torture in the face of overwhelming evidence that we do and continues to argue for the right to interpret "torture" as he sees fit.

He has instituted widespread eavesdropping of US citizens and claimed the right to label a person an "enemy combatant" and demanded that they be denied access to courts to challenge their imprisonment.

He appears incapable of interpreting the world in anything other than a Manichean "black and white" frame of mind that permits no subtlety or flexibility in his policies.

He appears to be incompetent, incurious, largely ignorant and at times almost incoherent when speaking extemporaneously.

I'm sure there have been plenty of ignorant and/or arrogant presidents in the our history but I'd have to believe that no president before Bush has done more to hurt our country's reputation to the world. Sadly, the damage he has done will be affecting us negatively for the rest of our lives.

I will give you Bush as the worst president since FDR, although it is a close call with LBJ and Nixon who both visited more damage on the country than has Bush to date. The difference is that they had some strong points to balance their obvious weaknesses.

As for all-time worst: Andrew Johnson by a long shot. He screwed up the results of the Union success in the Civil war which was not rectified for a hundred years.

Clinton will be in the top ten presidents: peace, prosperity, a war won in Yugoslavia without casualties, and a balanced budget make for good history.

As far a Monica, every third president has had his Monica, it is just juicier in the electronic age. And, of course, it didn't help that Monica herself was a total dufus, nor that Hillary was not very likeable.

Bush is either the worst or second-worst President in US history. The other contender is James Buchanan, the President before Lincoln who's partially responsible for the outbreak of Civil War.

All of Bush's policies have led to increased human misery. As a liberal, I disagree with almost everything Bush has done. Bush and his administration are among the least competent in US history. Bush created major disasters, such as the Iraq quagmire and the budget deficit, in contrast to the nation's peace and prosperity when Bush took office.
