When they awoke, they all had sore heads, and they sat tied up with ropes of bramble. They were so thoroughly and tightly wound around their torsos that all struggling to move was in vain. They had been moved to a wall away from the fire. Trena sat bound back-to-back with Jacob, the twins back-to-back with each other. They turned their heads toward the fire. There, just a few feet from the flames, stood the dread monstrosity. It was over eleven feet tall, equally divided between lower and upper body. The skin was brownish and coarse, tree bark-like. It was also covered with thick, black body hair. Thick and massive, it was dressed only in a skirt of multi-colored animal skins almost to knee level. From one long and massive neck sprung two ugly heads with twisted features and black eyes, covered in thick black hair that hung down to the eyebrows in front and cascaded over the side, front and back of the shoulders. The two heads seemed to be arguing with each other. The worst thing was, though, that he smelled strongly like raw sewage. For long moments, the stunned on-lookers could not speak.

“Do you know what it's saying?” Jacob finally asked Trena timidly.

To her surprise, Trena found that her elven animal-sense did allow her to understand the language of the double-headed giant.

“It's arguing with itself over how to kill and eat us. It seems to be settling on roasting us alive!”

They all gasped out of hopeless desperation. Trena did not know what to do. She thought about trying to call Wind Eye. But that had to be meant to be, and she found that she just could not do it.

“It's all my fault!” cried Sapphire.

“Oh, my God, it can't end like this!” a dismal Jacob whined.

Then he began to cry out at the top of his lungs “HELP! HELP! SOMEONE HELP! ANYONE HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP!”

“Oh, stop it!” Emerald moaned, “There is not a man or elf for miles!”

The two heads argued with each other for about five more minutes, before agreeing on something. The companions sat in stunned silence, certain that the end was near.

“He has made his decision. We are to be roasted alive!” Trena could speak in but a stunned whisper.

“Oh, Dear Lord!” Jacob cried, closing his eyes in anticipation as the giant moved slowly toward them.

Just as the horrific beast bent over to scoop up Trena and Jacob in its massive arms, the odor emanating from its body gagging them, a shout echoed from the entryway.

“Just you stop right there, you... you vile two-headed nanny-nobber!”

The giant froze where he was, his gargantuan arms just inches from wrapping around the bound forms of Trena Treelimb and Jacob Hope. He then turned to face this new threat.

The being that stood just inside the entryway could not have been much more than four feet tall. He was draped in a hauberk of glistening silver-colored armor that stopped just above his knees and was sleeveless. His arms and legs were tree stump-like; he had ruddy-white skin. A faceless, horned-helm of the same material sat upon the head which housed wide grey eyes and a wide nose, from which a thick bright-red beard hung to just past the bottom of his chest. Although he appeared to have the height of an adolescent boy, he was clearly no child with the great, gleaming double-edged battle axe with bronze hilt firmly gripped across his body in both hands, which were gloved in glistening scaled gauntlets that extended to the middle of his forearms.

The twin heads of the giant let out a primal roar as he ran over to a massive branch of oak near the fire, scooping it up in one hand. At the same time, the valiant dwarf began his charge toward the giant, whom awaited the assault.

The dwarf closed in and took a swing with his axe. The giant thrusted the makeshift club out to meet the attack. The axe cleaved into the big branch and the blade became momentarily stuck within, as the giant attempted to level a kick at the dwarf. But the dwarf deftly dodged the kick while still holding on to the handle of his axe. After several seconds, he wrenched the axe free.

The giant and the dwarf then began to circle each other. The dwarf's short boots were fashioned from hardened leather, making him lighter on his feet then heavy steel boots would have.

Many seconds later, the melee resumed in full force. For several minutes the two fought an epic battle. Although each landed a number of blows, none were critical. The dwarf must have caught the giant with a dozen different blows to the leg, but none were full or strong enough to have a great deal of effect. The giant's oak-like skin was so tough that the blows amounted to little more than scratches. The giant landed seven or eight massive blows with the huge club, and, even though the dwarf felt their force, they could not knock him down or dent his armor. One blow did, however, land on his right arm, leaving lots of pain and a nasty bruise.

Then, of a sudden, the dwarf charged forward, running right in between the giant's legs. The giant missed with an overshot downward bash as he did so. The dwarf came to a sudden stop behind the giant. He then launched a powerful spinning attack of one-and-a-half revolutions that cut into the giant just above the knee as he turned around to face him. It cleaved him all the way to the bone. Blood gushed out, and the giant screamed in agony.

The enraged giant then countered with a bash from the huge club that was so hard that it dented the side of the dwarf's helmet and sent him sprawling unto his back, launching him several feet through the air. He then started toward the fallen dwarf, attempting to crush his face with a massive foot stomp. But the dwarf rolled out of the way at the last second, then he came back to his feet.
