We live in a small suburb of New Jersey. Upscale locale surrounded by urban sprawl but it's home. On the news last night is a teacher from the local high school arrested for getting frisky with three 15 year olds. Then it gets worse, two more students came forward today. She was a single mom, her kids 2 and 4 were taken into custody. She's been teaching at that school for seven years.

I had five children go through that school system. Random thoughts

Besides the immorality of it, how stupid could she be? You teach in a tony school system and have a family...so you blow it all literally to get frisky with your students. And you actually believe it won't be revealed eventually???

That school system takes the "Obligation to Report" laws very seriously. For instance when my special needs kid told a guidance counselor that she had rats in her bedroom. Child protection was knocking on our door the next day. What hadn't been clarified was that yes indeed my daughter has rats in her bedroom.

They live in a large clean cage on her dresser.

We had other similar misunderstandings with that school system. So while they have child services on speed dial for parents that they deem suspicious they have a teacher like this right under their noses...bastards.

The teacher was definitely pretty stupid for thinking those boys weren't going to talk about their sexual escapades with her.

The "rats in my bedroom" story was pretty funny...but probably not for you. You're the one dealing with the child protective services knocking on your door.

The seeming double standard does make one angry, no doubt. The fact is, in regards to the teacher, it probably took forever for anyone to come forward and say something to the authorities. Offenders who abuse minors are typically able to pursuade their victims not to tell with tricks, threats or gifts, at least for a while. Also, there's the whole factor of her being a teacher that keeps people from suspecting her too much.

Sometimes it is not so private. A local male teacher was sent to jail for involvement with a female student. I found out later from others who had gone through that school that it was well known for years that he would select a Senior female to be his girlfriend for the year. He eventually picked the wrong girl...

Pedophilia is a deeply entrenched psychological issue, one that is hard to curb by counselling or other methods. We had a case here not long ago of a pedophile that was released after serving what was nearly a life sentence (he was just about ready for the old age pension), and then re-offended after a couple of months.

Those so driven will invent various measures to deflect suspicion. They can become very good at it, as the Roman Catholic church was come to realize in recent years.

As for the rats, this could mean something, or could mean nothing, for those outside the loop. Those tasked with investigating likely thought they had to be sure, even if they had suspected that it was indeed nothing. Better to have them vigilant than lackadaisical IMO, even if that means some irritation.

Strangely enough, some pedophiles are quite open about their (what to call it) deviation, perversion. Ever here of NAMBLA (North American Man-Boy Love Association)? Yes, it really exists.

When I first heard of NAMBLA on SOUTHPARK, I thought they were fake. Of course later I found out they were quite real.
