Revolution seems inextricably intertwined with democracy. "Ancien régimes" don't tend to relinquish power graciously; no matter what the cost in human life.

Are the benefits of democracy worth all the wars which are fought to win them?

In honour of Bastille Day, here's an excerpt from the book on that topic:

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the Howth gun-running:
one of the opening salvos of Ireland's revolutionary decade 1913 - 1923

Monday was also the anniversary of the controversial shooting of Harry Boland: a close friend of Michael Collins.

A chapter in the book looks into unanswereed questions around Boland's death, and possible links to Collins' own, just days later. Read excerpts here: http://wp.me/p43KWx-3H

Excerpts from the review of

"The Assassination of Michael Collins: What Happened At Béal na mBláth?"

"...devles beyond the official story of an ambush presenting a new picture ... None of the witnesses to the event told the same story and several of the accounts were contradictory. Can Sigerson crack this cold case?... My Dad, upon finishing this deeply researched piece of non-fiction called me. “Is this true?” he asked, “It’s like a Dateline mystery!”

"Sigerson doesn’t sensationalize the case instead choosing to present the evidence and allow readers to draw their own logical conclusions. ... Sigerson lays out the political climate and historical backdrop of the time in a way that is easy to follow ... arranges what was a very confused case for readers from the Civil War to the ambush in which Collins was killed.

"The Notes section ... at the end of the book features a list aiding those of us not so familiar with the personality or the case. In the Kindle edition, it was easy to click back and forth to get that extra gem fleshing out the case. If you are not familiar with Collins, his life or his death, you will have the information to enjoy this work of non-fiction and may even want to look further into the life of this influential historical figure.

"As a history and mystery buff I couldn’t help but keep reading. The next twist would be the last before I put the book down and did whatever household chore or got some much-needed sleep.

"Despite the appropriate historical distance of the author, Sigerson takes a wistful chance to point out the loss Collins was to the Irish people, in Chapter 19 entitled “What if Collins had Lived,” ... My Dad said that upon finishing that chapter he was left stunned. He couldn’t believe how well laid out both the case and possibilities lost were...

Michael Collins: "Threats" played no part in signing the Treaty

One reads in a number of histories that Collins signed the Treaty of 1921 due to threats of "immediate and terrible war."

This seems rather out of character for Collins, who was not known to be swayed by threats. In his own words, "The threat of 'immediate and terrible war' did not matter overmuch to me... if the Irish Nation had accepted that, I should have gladly accepted it."

Michael Collins: the real meaning the 1916 Rising

Excerpts from Michael Collins' own writings on 1916 and the struggle for Irish freedom

"The real importance of the Rising of 1916 did not become apparent until 1918 ... The declaration of a Republic was really in advance of national thought ... It was a gesture to the world that there could be no confusion about."

The Treaty & Michael Collins
The peace negotiations, and the Treaty which they produced, are the events which led directly to Michael Collins’ death.

Why did the Treaty split the independence movement? How was Collins separated from some of those he had so recently led in an unprecedented victory?

These are questions that must be reconsidered, if we are to understand what happened to him.

So that's interesting. What did you disagree with?

There is certainly a lot of information missing about Collins' death. That seems to be the problem the book is talking about.
