I was sharing with a friend that if a person has trouble understanding a book, one thing that might help is to read the book out loud. (Preferably when nobody is around.) That's what I do. It allows me to pace myself and stay more focused, opposed to hearing the lawnmower run outside; I think my neighbors live to mow! Hahaha!
Am I the only person who does this?

Re: Am I the only person who reads a book out loud?
I do this regularly. And always when nobody else is around. LOL
I find reading out loud keeps me focused and prevents me from skimming or going into robot mode when I read and don't pay attention to what I'm reading. This robot mode is similar to driving your car on "auto pilot." You get in your car and the next thing you know you're at your destination with hardly a memory of the trip. With reading the trip is the adventure so I like to read out loud when possible and appropriate.
Don't tell anyone but when reading non-fiction that isn't particularly engrossing I'll actually stand while I read. This keeps me focused and awake. Fortunately I don't have to employ this advanced concentration technique too often. Back when I was in college it sure came in handy during long nights of studying.

And Brooks I am really enjoying your participation here on BookTalk.org. You ask great questions and make posts that are hard to walk away from without commenting.

Not at all. Reading out loud helps one to understand the tone and rhythm of a piece.

In his classic, How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler, from what recall almost with 100% certainty, actually recommends it when, the reading is very involved.

That's great!
Ant, I own an Adler book, How to Think About God. I'll have to check out the book you recommended.
I encourage my students to read out loud, especially those taking history. I'm teaching Twentieth Century History this semester, WWI to Present.
It also does something else. I was an announcer for a public radio station at one time. (I miss that.) Reading out loud comes in handy with public speaking. You learn timing.

When I read How to Read A Book, i knew the author had a great deal of philosopher in him.
I read How to Think About God. I borrowed it from the public library.
Adler is an Intellectual, without question.
How to Think About God is a book I need to purchase from Amazon!

Re: Am I the only person who reads a book out loud?
Oh, I love to read books out loud. I noticed that while I read Books silently, my thinking and reflection process often only Starts after I've put it down. When reading out loud, I begin to reflect and think about what I've read even while reading, so I get the feeling of being much closer to the story.
