Re: no blacks or gays please
Rand Paul is making the classic mistake of approaching complex issues as if they are black and white. Conservatives tend to do this more than liberals. Rand is trying to be a true blue Libertarian, but such a position is just nuts. And I think he probably knows it and now regrets the things he's said. But perhaps not.

Paul is saying what he honestly believes, but he doesn't recognize how unpopular libertarian and Tea Party beliefs are among the general population. While the Tea Party movement can dominate many Republican primaries, the selected candidates will have a hard time being elected to office, even in Republican states like Kentucky.
The silver lining is that far-right candidates will repel voters, reducing Democratic losses despite the sucky economy and right-wing anger towards Obama.

He says he's supporting 'freedom of speech.' Okay, letting racists discuss their views is not the same as not letting a black person go into a certain restaurant.

Does anyone else find it sad that this mentality still exists, even in small numbers?
So much for progress. Next they'll be telling me I can't vote because I have ovaries instead of testicles.
Does it still count if you have your ovaries removed? Maybe some black folk can bleach their skin like Michael Jackson. Or wear Ronald Reagan masks. People still like Reagan, right?

Re: no blacks or gays please
To be fair to Rand Paul, it is possible that his statements do not reflect any racist sentiments, but are truly an attempt to explain his libertarian views. But even this is still shocking.
His ideas about unfettered business practices, with little to no government oversight, are at best an eccentricity based on a narrow and surprisingly uninformed knowledge of history, or at worst a bias fueled by a neurotic interpretation of society, bolstered, perhaps, by hopes of financial gain by those he is championing.
Either way it is shocking that someone who aspires to an extremely influential position in society can do so while displaying so little in the way of intellectual substance. And more importantly, it is disturbing that he is able to marshal the support that he does. One buffoon is merely the court jester; a buffoon that has the support of 30% or more of the electorate is a worry. And if news reports and polls are to be believed, that’s about were he is, 30% or a little better, if we look at proclaimed support of the Tea Party. And we have the precedent of George Bush receiving about 50% of the vote despite his many grammar and content free proclamations during his campaigns

Yes, I really meant to say that. In the 90s there was a joke that Michael Jackson had bleached his skin in order to "become white." Yes, it was known that he had a rare skin disease where he ended up losing most of his melanin, the secretion that adds pigment to the skin, but it was funnier to joke that he had "become white" intentionally. It was a joke. Funny. I guess you had to be there.

Yes, I was alive during the 90's so I heard that joke. I just don't find it funny. Being there or not But I actually thought people didn't use it anymore. Anyways...
