New Book on the Difficult Sayings of Jesus
Hi all,
Just thought to let you know that Taught by God: Making Sense of the Difficult Sayings of Jesus has just been published, which essentially examines the most difficult sayings of Jesus through a unique synthesis of modern scholarship, rabbinic literature, and the early church Fathers. It essentially the most difficult of the questions asked of the Gospels and has been endorsed by some of the most respected biblical scholars.
Please also let me know your thoughts and whether you have any questions?
Thanks again,
Daniel
Endorsements:
"It is heartening to see the treasures of Orthodoxy come together with modern biblical scholarship.... The encounter is fascinating and, for both Church and academy, full of promise." --Dale C. Allison, Jr. Errett M. Grable Professor of New Testament & Early Christianity, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, USA
"Taught by God is well researched and speaks clearly and informatively to many of the most difficult aspects of the biblical witness ... students, clergy and lay people could all greatly benefit from a close reading of the book's arguments and the evidence provided to support them. Daniel Fanous draws a great many good and plausible conclusions regarding difficult passages, and has provided a highly useful tool for people who read Scripture in depth and find themselves troubled or perplexed by these passages." --Very Rev. John Breck Professor of Biblical Interpretation & Bioethics, St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute, France.
"Fascinating and informative ... This book illuminates the background of Jesus' controversies with the Jewish religious leaders and makes Jesus' difficult sayings come alive for the modern reader. The author has done his homework and provides exciting insights into Jesus' ministry." --Very Rev. Dr. Theodore Stylianopoulos Professor of Orthodox Theology & New Testament, Holy Cross Orthodox School of Theology, USA.
Book Information: Few would dispute that the sayings of Jesus were and are important. But though important, these very same sayings are difficult at best and incomprehensible at worst. Sayings like, "The kingdom of heaven suffers violence," or, "I did not come to bring peace but a sword," have confused readers of the Gospels for thousands of years. Others such as, "My Father is greater than I," and, "My God why have You forsaken Me?" have sparked theological infernos that have plagued Christianity from its beginnings. From the greatest theologians to the smallest child, the same question is always asked: What did Jesus really mean? In considering only the most difficult of the sayings of Jesus, Taught by God brings together the academic rigour of modern biblical scholarship and the profound wisdom of the early Church Fathers in a unique, lively, and dramatic synthesis.
Author Information: Dr. Daniel Fanous is an independent scholar and is the author of the acclaimed The Person of the Christ (2008) as well as numerous articles. He has extensively studied and taught New Testament theology, as well as holding degrees in medicine and engineering.

Welcome to BookTalk. I hope you'll stick around a bit and let us know more about Orthodox beliefs. This is quite foreign to my upbringing but is intriguing to me. Your books look excellent (based on the smattering of comments/info at amazon. Thanks.

Re: New Book on the Difficult Sayings of Jesus
hey dawn,
where do you want me to start? haha. Orthodoxy would probably claim that is not a denomination of Christianity technically, since it lays claim to continuity with the apostolic Church (that is it traces its teachings to the earliest Fathers of the Church) - and thus orthodoxy = "right worship" or simply correct faith/real Christianity. In this respect Orthodoxy would also claim that absolute truth was revealed in Jesus, and that this truth has been dynamically "traditioned" from generation to generation by three sources: scripture as interpreted through tradition, as lived and practiced in the Church. If your interested find an orthodox (english speaking) church nearby and visit on a Sunday. Also, the best introduction (and most readable) remains Kallistos Ware's "The orthodox church" and "the orthodox way".
Let me know what you think of "Taught by God" - which by the way is written for any Christian, since its subject is the difficult sayings of Jesus; the one advantage being its use of what the earliest Christians/theologians also thought concerning the sayings.

I didn't get an answer to my question. Is the Bible the inspired Word of God?

Re: New Book on the Difficult Sayings of Jesus
Dfan, answer these concerns and ill consider buying the book. In John chapter 14, verses 12 through 14, Jesus tells all of us just how easy prayer can be:
"I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." [ref] Look at how direct this statement is: "You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." This is the "Son of God" speaking. Have we taken him "too literally?" No. This is a simple, unambiguous statement. Have we taken his statement "out of context?" No - Jesus uses the word anyone. Yet Jesus' statement is obviously false. Because when we ask God to cure cancer tonight, nothing happens. We see the same thing over and over again...
In Matthew 18:19 Jesus says:
Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them. In James 5:15-16 the Bible says: And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. In Mark 9:23: All things are possible to him who believes. In Luke 1:37: For with God nothing will be impossible. The message is reiterated Mark 11:24: Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours

Daniel
Thanks Daniel for the clarification of what the Orthodox church represents. I do hope one day to visit an orthodox church--seems the challenge here might be finding an English-speaking one... There are no orthodox churches in our present community, but the nearest big city has several of different ethnic varieties (Greek, Russian, Serbian, Ukranian...) I appreciate the book recommendations! And I like the idea of your book taking advantage of what the earliest Church fathers thought. This is an angle we often miss nowadays. Thanks!
