It is amazing how things can change in ten years. I would have said rap/dance back then - now it is classical. Today rap music gives me a headache.

Wotcha

The only music genre I don't like is manufactured commercial pop - soulless expression of capitalism that it is. Any art form that is a genuine desire of someone/people to express themselves and their feelings, naive or ludicrously complex, it enthralls me. I'm a musician myself producing arty, avant garde style music influenced by nothing in particular - I've extended my abstract expressionism in painting into sound. My tastes span pretty far out into domains of music which many people would find impenetrable... though I do have my limits! As I type this I'm listening to an album called 'Time Machines' by avant garde pioneers 'Coil' which I would describe off the top of my head as an audio rendition of a Mark Rothko painting, subliminal and cerebral. Would any of you find that sort of thing interesting? Of course I like to rock the house down to a bit of Talking Heads too!

I'm pretty much limited to rock music, but I keep around some techno and a CD by Eleni Karaindrou (Trojan Women) for when I want something pre-classical so I can reflect.

I'll have to run a search on WinMX for these artists you guys are mentioning. As for my vote, I choose country as my favorite. Years ago I was one of the people that said, "I like everything except country!" Wow, so many people say this as if liking country just isn't cool. But I've never been one to care about being cool...as is obvious to those that know me. I simply am cool. :smokin j/k

The genres I like...

1. Country
2. Rap/dance
3. Blues
4. Jazz
5. Classical
6. Folk
7. Celtic
8. Opera
9. Heavy metal
10. Classic rock
11. Rock

Damn...I like it all. The only genre I'm not into is alternative. But after talking to one of my friends I might have to reconsider this. Alternative is simply music that isn't mainstream, and I would have to really expose myself to it to be able to make a determination of whether or not I enjoy it. I guess I could say that much of the alternative I have heard seems like trash.

I love rap. How can anyone not like Eminem, or 50 cent, or Too Short, or Tu Pac? You really need to hear this on my car stereo. I have 710 watts currently, but soon I'm adding 1000 more.

I disagree with Mr. Nonzero and CSfilm. Pop music isn't necessarily a "soulless expression of capitalism," nor does it have to be commercially manufatured. It's the music that belongs to less talented musicians, perhaps, but doesn't that fit under the given category of 'naive art'? Pop music is simply that which owns a tune or a few lyrics catchy enough to grab the mind of a good percentage of (well paying) people -- granted these people generally take part in the machiene of society. Pop music is an amateurish, mentally sticky genere of music, but that doesn't make it bad.

As for myself, there is no music that I don't love (with the exception of those songs that get stuck in your head and refuse to leave >_<). Music is like religions for me; I have a hard time staying with a particular one. At the moment, my tendancies are moving away from classic rock to the origin of R&B, but it's a slow transition. Right now, in my CD player, one would find Pink Floyd, New Order, Onedia, Leatherface and Blue Oyster Cult (I have one of those 5-player things). So I range, I guess, but haven't been ranging long enough to know what I'm talking about.

...well, there's my two cents. Don't spend it all in one place.

Dear silent'

Point taken, my comment was a bit sweeping sorry. Yes of course there are great pop bands out there… although not many these days IMO. By ‘soulless expression of capitalism’ I was thinking of the shamelessly manufactured pop bands such as the ‘Pop Idol’ TV contests and all that nonsense. The sort of ‘band/artist’ that prostitutes themselves to record label bosses or band mangers who dictate what is released or what the music is like depending upon what will get them the most cash. Real creativity flows freely away from profitable interest. I could never look at this as relating to a naďve sort of innocence music to be appreciated, simply because of its lack of sincerity. The horrible thing is that this sort of lackluster music saturates the air waves and limits people’s ideas of what music is or can be. Hearing outfit after outfit blurting out their generic musical/lyrical crap is nigh on unbearable to me. Fair enough, people – who knackered from their weekly grind at the rat race - enjoy to get hopelessly drunk and loose themselves in shallow insignificant drivel… but isn’t it a tad sad? Doesn’t it bare testimony to a deplorable area of social decay?

I used to think that there were only two genres of music; good music and bad music.

In reality this merely amounts to saying that there is music you like and music that you don't like.

The difference between classical music and popular music is that popular music is emotional and classical music is contemplative.

This difference is quantifiable. Listening to classical music stimulates alpha wave activity in the brain. Listening to pop/rock music stimulates beta wave activity.

Is rap music? Yes it is music. Most people who dislike rap actually dislike the values espoused by rap music. I don't like the glamorization of violence and machismo of rap music, but if I'm honest, there are some great rap songs. Even rap music can transcend the limitations of genre.

My problems with music stemmed from trying to get more out of it than was ever in it in the first place. As the great wigger-dinosaur said, "It's only rock'n roll"

Well put. I especially like "...only two genres of music; good music and bad music...this merely amounts to saying that there is music you like and music that you don't like."

But doesn't music need to be sorted with a few more categories? By popular do you mean rock n roll only, or how about all the Frank Sinatra albums? The Big Band oldies? Celtic ballads? The Anniversary Waltz? Sousa marches?

Is not Mozart's Requim emotional? And Adaggio for Strings?

Good point. I am oversimplifying. Maybe you could say that popular music is designed to engage the attention at a more superficial level. It's designed for casual listening and is therefore more passive.

Although listening to classical music demands a state of physical passivity one is generally far more mentally engaged.

But, you are right, classical music is, or can be deeply emotional. Perhaps the greater mathematical complexity of classical music demands a more holistic attentiveness. A left-brain, right-brain fusion which is less profound than in popular music?

Well, if we're talking genres, it has to be rock!!! I started listening to Little Richard's screams and I haven't been the same since! The B.O.C. used to sing: "I'm d-a-m-a-g-e-d, but I like it"! Talk about pact with the devil!!!::97 ::100 !!!
I still listen to all that rocks, but I prefer psychedelic music and girl bands:
MAZZY STAR
OVER THE RHINE
THE YOUNG HERAT ATTACK
PLANET OF WOMEN

...and this sort of thing!!!::46
