WASHINGTON (AP) … The United States is getting an average grade when it comes to science.
And that's not sitting well with Congressman Rush Holt. The New Jersey Democrat says it's time to bolster science education in U.S. schools.
Holt is reacting to a report placing U.S. students in the middle of the pack in an
international study on science performance.
The United States ranks 29th out of 57 countries measuring the science savvy of
15-year-olds. Finnish students finished first.
Holt was assistant director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory before entering politics.
He is an advocate for teacher training as a member of the House Education and Labor Committee. |

Hello Mr P,
This piece of news was on French television yesterday evening, with the tune that: the French were poor, the Finnish were first (the US was not mentioned).
Science is God in French schools (I mean for parents and students, not only the Ministry of Education). I have no idea if we have problems in Physics and Biology, but I have some ideas for Maths -- it's always VERY complex to find out at the level of a nation.
A few years ago, English as a Foreign Language was tested in all nations in the European Community. The French came last, and our Inspectors have been screaming at us (English teachers) like banshees ever since.
I honestly don't think this means our students know no English, but again it's a long story. |
